I know you cant have a regular monitor if its the second or third in a thunderbolt chain but what about if you just run the regular display right from imacs thunderbolt port. then will it work?

Directly connected to a Mac will work. Look for the Mini DisplayPort Adapters on the Apple Store website. At least some of them say "...to a Mac with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port."

How about daisy-chaining two 2011 iMacs? Is that possible? Just theoretical as I dont even own one.
