I recently acquired a Canon i850 printer. When I realized that, although I had used about 30% of the black ink, the graphic display provided by the BJ Printer Utility (which accompanies the driver) showed all cartridges to be full. The graphic and the manual both indicated that the actual ink level is displayed. However, when I contacted Canon support they informed me that the graphic only provides an indication of when a cartridge is nearly empty. Since the printer provides no other indication the only way to find out how much ink is remaining is to physically remove a cartridge for a visual check.
Other brands display the ink level information (e.g., Epson) so surely it's not too much to expect Canon to do it.
