A new LaCie 16GB USB 3.0 stick will not format using disk utility.

Erase/partition, GUID/other options, journaled/unjournaled all hopeless. It is stuck for hours on "creating partition map". It will continue "creating partition map" even when the stick is unplugged.

No problem formatting the drive to anything I wish under Windows, so drive is fine.

I intend to use it for a Mavericks installation. Any other way of formatting this drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

    Thanks all.

Edited for future reference: upgraded to Mavericks and used disk utility there, from which a clean install could be made.

This is weird indeed. Although I won't get into the details of it here, you could search on the internet how to use the frisk command line tool to do what you want (terminal window).

Perhaps your permissions are setup incorrect (use Disk Utility to repair permissions)
