iPod touch Can't go back in a Playlist?

If you load a playlist on your touch, and start playing say the 5th song in the list, and you click the forward button it skips to the next track, but if you click the previous button it goes back to the playlist instead of playing the song before the one you started on. Did that make sense? :) Am I just missing something?
