Anyone know if this is working with PB3 and does CCC work with thumb drives? Want to image my SDD to a 256gb thumb drive.
[doublepost=1501506336][/doublepost]A little more background on my intentions. Image my HFS+ internal SSD boot drive to USB stick. Blow away the SSD and hopefully format it as APFS and restore the thumb drive to the APFS SSD.

ccc is working fine here, and a thumb drive is just another external drive, no reason for it not to work. as far as the rest... no idea (but, anyone else?)...

Thanks, yeah I would be curious on what other thoughts people have on what I am trying to do.

1st question that comes to my mind - never tried it myself - is can you boot from a CCC made USB clone? The biggest must-have feature of CCC - I use eSATA external drives for that - and the #1 reason I bought it!

No downtime while restoring the clone back to a new HDD/SSD!

Cheers

i've got a bootable clone of my pro now, and i can def boot to it, and work (standard usb3 drive).

why not try it? make a bootable clone, then boot to it, make sure all is well... before you proceed with your plan (and again, anyone else with thoughts on this?)

You can use CCC to clone to any HFS+ drive, USB is fine.

BUT... I would be wary of converting to APFS at this time. Just seems to be too many problems with it at this point.

If things are running well for you (using HFS+) right now -- why risk it?

Ha ha, very very good point. I guess because I want to mess with it and I am a glutton for punishment. I want to safeguard by cloning my PB3 HFS image to the USB stick. I have a CCC copy of Sierra (pre beta) on a USB HDD. I will leave this be as it is my life preserver. It's just REALLY slow to restore from a spinner. I was hoping the stick would be quick. So it looks like I will be able to boot from the USB thumb drive and of course I will test it. The 100k question is, can CCC restore (write) an HFS image (USB stick) to an APFS formatted drive and will it boot. At the very least, if I format the drive successfully to APFS and the image from the stick won't work or write, can disk utility in PB3 format the APFS drive back to HFS+?

Of course I will try all of this once I am confident I can restore the image using CCC from the stick to the SDD in either format.

Yeah, I picked up a 256GB USB thumb drive on Amazon for $40. Crazy cheap. Now I can mess around and restore images quickly.
