Prior to Catalina, every time I would lift the lid and it'd come out of sleep, the superdrive would I guess "reset itself" ?? it was a common sound that I grew to just associate with the device waking up. It was there through the very first time I powered it on back when I purchased it(2012 Macbook Pro) through the very latest Mojave install.

When I installed Catalina, I noticed it no longer made the sound. Drive still works, and if I reboot my Macbook it'll make the sound but it's not doing it when coming from a sleep after lifting the lid.

I assume this is normal behavior in Catalina? I never understood the need for this to begin with so it was always awkward, but anyone else notice this?

Mine doesn't make the sound either, it should be fine. :)

I’m planning on upgrading it to an SSD soon!! I’m going to put 16 GB of RAM in also while it’s apart. :)

Nice! I added 16GB like the same week I bought the thing.. back when I first got it I was using Parallels a ton, so having a ton of ram is helpful. The thing is still a beast 7 years later! It's my daily laptop that I use.. I wish it had a high rest screen but its good for light gaming and web browsing, so I don't see a need to purchase anything new.

I got a little worried that the superdrive was failing or something with the Catalina install, but if it happens to you as well, I'm guessing its intended.

My superdrive is working fine since installing Catalina. And agreed, this machine definitely held its value pretty well. It's my daily driver and works well for older games and can play YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu at 1080 which is all I need. Plus light word processing.

I had an 08 Aluminium MacBook before this, the hard drive failed and it wasn't worth the money for an SSD so I upgraded to this instead. I strongly prefer the older generation of MacBooks to the newer one with zero ports and failing keyboards. :p
