Hi all. I have a MacBook Pro and have installed Catalina on it. It now will not login, i put the password in and the progress bar gets to about half way and the machine just turns off.

I've tried to re-installed the OS but it says i need another 5GB of space!? Why is this telling me this now cause i assume this is why i cant login. I now can't access the data to clear space.

So put Catalina on a USB drive and booted it from that, thinking i'll be able to see the data and delete appropriately but i cant locate the data despite the Macintosh HD - Data drive showing in the Disk Utility.

You may know a better way to get this fixed that doesn't require me to boot from USB?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you able to boot in safe mode? Power on while holding Shift key and see if it helps you get into your account.

Take a look at this also https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Sorry for the delay, man
Take a look at this to see if any of the other options (recovery mode or verbose) after safe mode allow you at least to backup things https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/repair-mac-disk-safe-mode-fsck/
Take a special look on the Copying the files manually part, might be of good help.

Which model year is your MBP? Native support on Catalina or running a patched version for unsupported Macs?

It can be a GPU problem if on an unsupported Mac. Also a faulty GPU chip depending on the model.

If supported, it’s most likely some sort stomach ache Catalina has sometimes when updated from older versions and user accounts. I Had to create a new admin when updated my 10.15 to 10.15.1 ... twice.
For Catalina, a fresh install seems to be the best option.
