Changing Time Machine back up disk

i recently got a new hdd for use with time machine and i'd like to know how i can transfer the data from the old hdd over to the new one. i tried just dragging and dropping but i get an error, also tried the disk utility method but i get an error with that as well. any ideas? thanks.
