At 1st glance many people who observed the Huangyan Island cannot believe China and Philippines would fight over such a small Island. Huangyan is so small only a handful of people could fit on it at one time. So why is it 2 major countries think Huangyan is worthy a major war?
To understand whats at stake you must look past the Huangyan Island and into the surrounding area. The waters around the Huangyan Island are ripe with fresh fish making it a hotspot for Filipino and China fisherman and fishing companies to make alot of money. Also China's scientist have found evidence of large amounts of Oil. Combine the potential of Oil and the vast amount of fishing prospect's and now the Huangyan Island are worth far more than meets the eye. For China its a gold mine that will help it grow thier dynasty. For the Philippines and filipino it means new found economic grow, which is sorely needed for the Philippine people.

Who do you think has the right to the island?

    Disputed as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarborough_Shoal

I would agree that the Philippines needs it way more than China, but that's fairly irrelevant to whom it actually belongs to.

Phillipines. China's claim is almost as absurd as Argentina's infantile claims on the Falklands.

China is a country defined by its relationship to Continental Asia. The Phillippines are a collection of Islands. I would think if this island had any rational relationship with the Phillippines, it would be and should be, part of the collection of islands, and not a part of continental Asia.

Who should "own" a tiny island between New Zealand and Australia. How do you decide?

In this case, Huangyan Island (the Minzhu reef) is a lot closer to the Phillipines, and in fact, about as close to Vietnam as China.

Turn it into a sanctuary, don't extract the oil or deplete the fish.

    Win-win-win.

The government of the Philippines is so densely corrupt that even if that country did get the island and all the surrounding natural resources -- somehow most of the money would make it into the hands of the politicians. Almost none of it would end up benefiting the country as a whole. That being said, I think some type of shared governance is most fair.
