Oh dear, not even sworn in yet and triggering a nuclear standoff…

    The Independent

"The US should "prepare for a military clash", a state run Chinese tabloid newspaper has warned.

Less than 24 hours after US Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson appeared to call for a blockade of South China Sea islands, a strongly-worded English editorial in the Global Times accused the former ExxonMobil chief executive of "rabble-rousing".

He "had better bone up on nuclear power strategies if he wants to force a big nuclear power to withdraw from its own territories", the paper, which is known for writing hawkish editorials, said."

Pretty amazing the number of Dollar Store customers who take umbrage with anything and everything that may appear offensive to the Chinese government.

China would be putting $300 Billion of Chinese investment in the US at risk.

Obama was too frightened to stop China from illegally building artificial islands all over the Pacific. Not much we can do about it now. Another Obama-created international disaster.

Yes, we own those islands, don't we? Just because they're only 200 miles off the Chinese shore, and 8000 miles off American shores, doesn't mean that they can get away with invading our territory...

China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims.

China has backed its expansive claims with island-building and naval patrols. The US says it does not take sides in territorial disputes, but has sent military ships and planes near disputed islands, calling them "freedom of navigation" operations to ensure access to key shipping and air routes.

Both sides have accused each other of "militarising" the South China Sea.

There are fears that the area is becoming a flashpoint, with potentially serious global consequences.

The most serious trouble in recent decades has flared between Vietnam and China, and there have also been stand-offs between the Philippines and China. Some of the incidents include:

    • In 1974 the Chinese seized the Paracels from Vietnam, killing more than 70 Vietnamese troops.
    • In 1988 the two sides clashed in the Spratlys, with Vietnam again coming off worse, losing about 60 sailors.
    • In early 2012, China and the Philippines engaged in a lengthy maritime stand-off, accusing each other of intrusions in the Scarborough Shoal.
    • Unverified claims that the Chinese navy sabotaged two Vietnamese exploration operations in late 2012 led to large anti-China protests on Vietnam's streets.
    • In January 2013, Manila said it was taking China to a UN tribunal under the auspices of the UN Convention on the Laws of the Sea, to challenge its claims.
    • In May 2014, the introduction by China of a drilling rig into waters near the Paracel Islands led to multiple collisions between Vietnamese and Chinese ships.
The Philippines has sought international arbitration instead. In 2013, it announced it would take China to an arbitration tribunal under the auspices of the UN Convention on the Laws of the Sea, to challenge its claims.

In July 2016, the tribunal backed the Philippines' case, saying China had violated the Philippines' sovereign rights.

China had boycotted the proceedings, and called the ruling "ill-founded". It says it will not be bound by it.

I wish both USA and China know what they are doing. Going nuke not interesting.

But I doubt Chinese would ever consider back down and avoid further confrontation, neither USA would.

Indeed - dicking around with Israel, Russia and Cuba in the twilight of his presidency, yes, I agree, he has been busy.

Wonder what else - besides years of "quantitative easing" - that he can be busy with in the shadow of his presidency to leave even more horse**** for the next president and congress and US citizenry.

    Busy, indeed.

What's the unemployment rate? How many people have health insurance? How are the numbers on the economy? Most experts say Trump is inheriting a country in much better shape than the one Obama received. If there is any dicking around with the country, its going to be coming from the uneducated public who think a TV celebrity is going to fix all of our problems.

I was thinking. After all the Republican complaining about Hillarys speaches and Wall Street, I wonder how many of Trumps new Goldman Sachs execs appointed to positions in his administration may have actually heard one of her speaches? We are being duped and are too stupid to realize it. Worrying too much about partisan politics has clouded the minds of Americans.

Finally, please explain to me why we do business with communist China but won't even talk to communist Cuba? Is it because of something that happened 50 years ago? People will take Russia's word (a former communist foe) over a Democrat. We are in serious decline here.

I see the usual imbeciles are out in force again. And not one of them is to be found in the Chinese Politburo. The sheer idiocy of Trump is truly both staggering and terrifying.

Let's just start with this: Before he's even taken the Oath of Office, Trump has carelessly reopened a potential source of conflict with China over the status of Taiwan. He's threatened to impose illegal, blatantly mercantilist tariffs on Chinese goods. And he's spoken about cancelling the F35. The one military tool that might actually be somewhat useful if we ever did actually get into a shoving match with China over its claims in the South China Sea.

But wait, there's more! Trump is intent trashing the TransPacific Partnership, a trade agreement designed to foster economic and legal cooperation among the nations in the region, and carefully designed to prevent China from establishing a region of economic and political domination. Trump has explicitly told our military allies in the region that they shouldn't rely on US support for their defense.

Really? Neoliberal "free" trade deals are bad for workers here and bad for workers in developing and least developed countries. You should think long and hard before aligning your political liberalism with Reagan and Thatcher's economic vision of the world.

When the inevitable happens I hope Europe remains mostly untouched. I'd rather not move and I'd rather not take in US refugees, they're a dangerous race. Have you seen their homoicide figures?!

Donnie makes us good friends with the Russians and we gang up on the Chinese. All this without being the president for even one day.

How is it "brilliant"? The US will lose too if China's economy goes in the tank.

This isn't about Taiwan, this is about someone holding China to account for their actions. China is like that friend who comes over for the pizza and drinks, refuses to pay, and tries to get into a fight when he gets drunk and is breaking stuff in your house.

It's closing time China, no more state sponsored IP grabs, no more manipulating your currency, no more unbalanced trade deals, and no more free ride.
