iPod classic users: help me please

When my music has been playing for say 1 minute it goes to a screen with no backlight and play icon, battery icon and a number eg 1:14, 1:4

Does anyone know what this number means. I can't work it out.

It should be the current time.

it's not though. It's a real random thing i don't understand the relationship. Even if the song is a 6 mins it will still say 1:...
