Older notifications can be cleared all at once, while newer recent ones don't have that option. If you lock and unlock your device then the newer recent notifications will get moved over to the older section and could all be cleared from there at once.

Thank you. I’ll try that next time.

Not really sure what the benefit of this new “feature” is.

Agree- the notification system so far is a step backwards in iOS11. This is probably the first iOS release that I'm disappointed in, just still feels like a beta overall.

It’s confuses the hell out of me. Still can’t make it work right.

If you lock and unlock the device again don't your notifications all move to one "earlier" section that you can clear out all at once (using the 'x' that appears for that section, which you can also 3D Touch, is your device supports that, to clear everything out completely).

So are you saying now when I get a notification I have to re-lock my phone. Then unlock it and then clear the notifications?

    Seriously??

Seems so, though you can skip the last step of unlocking and swipe up on lock screen to view older notifications and clear. Given you might want to get back to an unlocked state anyway this tip might not save any time.

I agree it’s a shame to lose the option to immediately clear recent notifications but perhaps try not to let it bother you? Just looking out for your mental wellbeing.

Better link explaining how it works: http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-11-clear-all-notifications-heres-how-it-works/

Don't have to re-lock the device as it won't do anything: recents will still be there without the "X". To clear individual recent notifications, swipe the notification right to get the "Clear" option.

Not sure how long time-wise before a recent becomes a "Earlier Today" and can be cleared with the "X".

I too am not a fan of the new Notification Center.

If you want to clear them all out all together. Otherwise you can either clear one or a few individual ones. Or use 3D Touch.
