Meh, does anyone expect a stock photo to show actual code used to hack things?

It's not a very good analog. They show some hexadecimal values and some bastardized combination of bash with perl accents. Ultimately you wouldn't guess a password like this, unless they're trying a lot of different people. A modern browser wouldn't transmit it in plain text, but they could obtain a hash using a spoofed webpage, then cracked that using a dictionary. There are plenty of other ways, but this is still silly.

Actually, based on years of experience hacking is like the interview scene in Swordfish.

Obviously don't play this video at work because you should be working there.

Unacceptable. They should've used Impossible Mission.

There's also a security cam screenshot of the Russian hacker reaching the computer terminal, from the same game:

I think they missed the one that goes by the indecipherable nickname "@Huma76".

I can't find the link but I saw an article what showed each news channel breakdown of actual "News" and on average they were all around the same something like 5-7 hours of actual news in a 24 hour period and the rest was commentary, op-ed, commercials, etc.

Back in my days, it was cold pizza and warm Mountain Dew. Mountain Dew was the drink of choice for programmers back in the day because it was "yellow in, yellow out." Coke or Pepsi would have been "brown in, yellow out" a big taboo for the coder mentality.

Anyhow, if CNN was gonna use a picture of a hex dump, they could at least use one created by an hex editor instead of a screen cap of a video game. Good Gawd, the standards of journalism has dropped a lot since Walter Cronkite died.:(

It's a funny event, but there's no ethical violation per se.

What's the difference between creating an image of a hex dump—fake data for illustration—and using a screen cap of fake data for illustration that happens to come from a video game?

Both are illustrations—I'm assuming here that they didn't just steal the screen cap from Fallout—and don't show someone actually "hacking."

Given that it's a story about hacking, I'm assuming they either cracked the game using a disassembler or hunted through the game assets and re-rendered that supposed screenshot in unity.

Clinton News Network has gotten completely unhinged and disconnected from reality since Shrillery gave up the political ghost.

Yes, but I still watch it all the time, because it's just so entertaining. Van Jones is my favorite anchor, the guy always rails about racism while being blissfully unaware of the fact that he's the biggest racist in the room. I'm glad he survived the election night, I was a little worried about his mental state for a while, but he's now back and better than ever.

Note to CNN: the next time you need to augment a fake tech news story with impressive-looking terminal output, use nmap or tshark.

Just wondering - did they actually refer to that Fallout 4 hacking mini game and say that that is how Russians hack computers (like you seem to be saying) or did they simply use that blurry screenshot as a "tecchy looking" background image as teaser for the article?

In my day it was Jolt Cola! Ever since a poster was on campus with a skeleton at a computer saying happy studying! To me that was the perfect moment in time!

so was "hacking explained via Fallout 4" or not? Crickets from the deplorables.
