I know there's a way to do this by tampering with the firewire cable, but is there any other hack to do this?

No it's not.
I want to conect to iTunes to sync music, but not charge cause by charging when the battery is not fully drain you're ruining your battery.

The effect is negligible to the life of the product. It uses a lithium-ion polymer battery and not NiCd or NiMH.

Plug the cable into a USB hub, and not directly to the USB ports. It wont charge this way.

This is not accurate. In fact the opposite is true. While you should occasionally discharge the battery completely, you are better off not doing a full discharge every time.

But if you use a non-powered USB hub, this may work.

For the amount of time it takes to sync the ipod, it's not going to be charging all that long anyway.
