My iMac 27" (2017) is retired. I could try to sell it but not sure what it'd fetch (40GB RAM / 2TB OEM hybrid drive; near mint condition).

Sadly, this iMac doesn't have target mode. Booooo.

I don't have the skills to convert it to a 5K monitor but have seen where it's been done.

Is there anyone out there doing this?
If so, any idea how much they charge?

Thanks!

I have seen 2017 models asking $500 to $1,200. I don't know what they actually get for them but i5 CPUs probably get a lot less as they are slower than 2015 iMac i7s. I have a 2014 which I still use but do plan to try to set it up as a monitor one of these days using wired Ethernet over a Thunderbolt cable. I currently use a 2010 iMac 27 as a monitor for an M1 Mac mini and it's very nice. I really love the displays on the 27 inch iMacs whether 2K or 4K.

I read an article about exactly that just recently -- hang on a sec... found it. Luke Miani did the same conversion that you're talking about, but with a 2014 iMac. If memory serves, his video addresses where to get the appropriate components for both the older generation (1440p) and the newer generation (5K) iMacs. Really fascinating stuff.

As for "professionals" who are willing to do it for you? That's an entirely different ball of wax. Maybe try calling around to whatever mom-and-pop Mac repair shops happen to be in your area, and ask them? Chances are, someone who can competently perform repairs to iMacs should also be able to research and perform this bit of surgery.
