I'd love to know how to change this default behaviour. Sync'ing to exchange.

A timely thread. Google just announced CardDav syncing of contacts, which eliminates some of the restrictions with syncing via Exchange...including the field names limits.

Just add your Google account as a CardDAV with "google.com" as the server.

The new protocol supports full size images for contacts.

The only glitch I've noticed is that if your contact is a Gmail user and has their own photo attached to their account, it doesn't get pushed to the iOS device. Hopefully, Google will address this.

When you made this switch did you just shut off sync of contacts via Exchange? I don't think both Exchange contact sync and CardDAV for contact syncing are used together - right?

I had them both on for a while with no ill effect. My "All Contacts" group had many duplicates. Looks like it was the iPhone linking the contacts that have a their name field filled out but not linking the ones without names (business name only). So there were dupes on the iPhone, but not at Google or in the individual Exchange or CardDAV synced groups.

Another thing...when you're syncing only with CardDAV the "Groups" screen becomes unavailable as there really is no other group to see.

Also, groups created at Google still do not sync to iOS.

I was able to create CardDAV groups on my Google account for iOS by creating the groups on my Mac synced with CardDAV. It does not show up in Gmail but does on my Mac and iOS devices.

For the last two years I've been using www.google.com/contacts

Along with exchange it's a terrifically reliable, stable solution. Syncs across iOS, OS X, Windows & Android perfectly. Every computer & smartphone I own, are instantly updated no matter what I'm using.

You can even get a free exchange account & simple detailed directions from Google. It just doesn't get any easier than that.

Thanks Google :D
