Hi, I work as a full-time designer with a company but have always done a little bit of freelance here and there on the side. I am looking to expand the freelance work so thought I should do a website displaying my works as well as a business card to hand out occasionally.

It is important to note that I am not forming a "company" per say, I am just an independent freelancer so I am using my own name (Andrew Mackinnon abbreviated "AndrewMac") and am not implementing a business name or logo et. et. I hope you understand this more personal and simple approach/direction.

    Web Page

The web page is just a home page design to start with (obviously not to scale) but I am planning on doing a simple, clean, single page web design with automatic scroll when you hit the menu bar et.

    Business Card

Business card contact information is 7pt Gills Sans which I think should be legible but I am personally a fan of smaller type anyways. ;)
I printed it out on just your run of the mill inkjet printer using standard white paper and it came out pretty crisp. (I used a 'dummy' number btw).

With that being said, here are the start of the concepts. I would like to hear any thoughts, feedback or comments on this concept and design so far.

    Thanks

Looks okay, I don't like the button overlays on the web site.

It's funny that my business card looks very similar:

The only complaint I've gotten is from older guys that the font is quite small (it's 8pt), so you might want to think about keeping the font larger, especially the e-mail.

Also might consider changing "Hello" to "Hello, I'm Andrew"?

    Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, that is kind of funny regarding the similarity in the business cards. I like your design btw.

Do you think perhaps I should drop the overlay on the buttons and just have straight bold text as titles that are highlighted when selected/clicked on et. ?

I was thinking more like switching to oval or lower them down so the selector is inline with the frame.

I just have a quick comment. Get rid of the gradients on the business card. They aren't working.

I'm not sure they are working anywhere.

I definitely wouldn't have them going horizontal in one place and vertical in another.

I like the business card, but your not giving anyone any idea that your info is on the back. It might seem 'obvious', but people usually only like one side BCs.

I would move the HELLO to the right, with maybe the same arrow treatment as on the back. I would also make the gradations the same...horizontal for both.

    My 2 cents!

PS 8 pt type is too small no matter what age someone is....

What?! Wait... were did you hear that and from whom?

Are you saying that because you can only look at one side at a time? ;)

    Looks good so far bluetooth!

The business card looks good except the fact that I'm not a fan of the "Available for Hire" tagline. Seems a little tacky/desperate. I mean I know what your point is, but I'd just change it up entirely to saying something in terms of a slogan about your skill or something.

Have you tried bringing the 3d element of the bookmark's shadow to the "Hello" part as well? I think it would bring the cards together in the sense of consistency.

I don't have much to say about the web design except for the fact that I'd go with the button/tab version (bottom one).

Ok, thanks again all for the responses and feedback. Took into account some of the suggestions on the business card design and came up with a variation using the 3D or 'pop-up' tab on the front as suggested by a few.

Also thought of using, 'Check out my work" instead of "Available For Hire' although the "Available For Hire' was supposed to be more tongue and cheek. ;)

Let me know what you think of the business card revision, I posted it in the first thread et.

    Thanks.

Website: I like the text-only link options.

Card: As for the card, I like how it pulls the feel from the website and feels like a family.
But, I don't like the feeling there is no link from the front to the back. It seems you could have pulled the ribbon around but didn't. It almost feels each side is a separate card (though somewhat linked in style). I also don't like the "available for hire" ribbon as it feels to be pointing away from contact…though it does somewhat point to your name.

Just thoughts on it for now.

Thanks for the comments. I will look into designing a couple further variations of the card and post again for some feedback. All the points you made are quite valid.

    Cheers,

Hey Bluetooth! Lookin' good buddy. Personally I'm all for the use of gradients, but only sparingly and only to help to add a slight bit of texture to a design. While I like where you're going with the gradient idea I think they're kinda hitting people over the head a little and taking away from the overall design. Maybe pick one of those blue shades and and darken it slight towards the bottom. That with the inner drop shadow with give it that depth I think you were going after, but not saying "Hey everybody! I'm a gradient!" ;)

I'm not an expert (as you know), but I think the original one you posted would look better with a strong font without a gradient. I think the fading doesn't work that well for a professional card. I would go with something bold and very modern, and the gradient seems a little too playful. It's just a matter of taste, though :)

Thanks for the feedback again everyone.

I think I am going to look at doing a new concept/redesign. I will post some further designs over the next couple of weeks or so.

    Thanks again.

first. get rid of the work for hire crap. WAYYYY too needy.

second, update the graphics from the 80s.

third. the front should be one of those My Name Is _______ badges.

    http://www.ebaypartnernetworkblog.com/en/files/2011/05/hello-my-name-is.jpg

something like that. but better. not so big. and offset it to the right.

no offense bro. but you're a graphic designer who doesn't have any design sense?

if you want me to do a mockup for the business card i will.

That would be breaking rule number 4 of being a good designer. I hope you're being ironic?

no. i didn't mean one of those badges. i didn't know what to call it. i have the pic in my head right now. adn it looks pretty cool for a business card.

mind you, i haven't gone to college yet. but i think it should be a business card, with a mock up id with his photo and his name and phone numbers, slightly tilted to the right on the right side of the business card, with some of the id section cut off.

    nice name btw, MacBoobs Pro

    The card :

Double the font size and place that info below the banner.

It's a business card. The pertinent info should stand out.

That's actually not my card, it was another posters (Hansr) who posted his card because it has a similar design to the one I originally posted. I removed mine because I am moving towards a new concept.
