Well, it's pretty much in the title folks...

As an aside, I was startled at what came up when I was googling the link for this article...in any case, I can't dispute the argument put forward...

I've been calling this thing of his a cult for almost his entire campaign. And just like a cult it involves conning people, but as the article noted, rather than masquerading as a conduit to God, he himself is the thing you are supposed to worship.

With his history of conning people, no one should be buying into the cult, and yet they do. And just like a cult, he'll make them feel good for awhile, but ultimately the spell will wear off and disillusionment will set in.

To follow any leader blindly, most certainly Donald Trump, but anyone else for that matter, makes you an idiot*.

If you can't think for yourself then you're not thinking at all.

(*Not to be insensitive to cult survivors)

I figure that generally, his heart's in the right place about Joe SixPack's problems. His ideas, however, most likely won't be overly helpful. What he has going for him as far as I'm concerned is that he's not a NeoCon war hawk.

OTOH, Hillary hasn't seen a war she didn't advocate. She's been and is part of the NeoCon claque who strongly support the Wolfowitz Doctrine against Russia, which is pushing us toward a shooting war with Russia. I see that as not just evil but terminally stupid.

So, if you think bombs and heavy artillery make for proper urban renewal and landscaping, vote for Hillary. If you like death, destruction and refugees, vote Hillary.

Just remember: There will never be a truly realistic war movie. Would you enter a theater that smelled of a battlefield's rotting human meat?

"Claque" implies a lack of honor or legitimacy between its participants, suggesting those that are in the claque will turn on one another when it becomes convenient?

The point of the article is that Trump believes that he, Trump the person, is the answer to Joe SixPack's problems.

More like he has hoped that Joe SixPacks, a whole lot of them, would be the answer to his financial problems. Just one more hotel, casino, university and everything will magically run to double-digit profits. He's sort of like an inversion of the Statue of Liberty: we're welcome as long as we've got something to spend on his ventures while we're here. How he thinks to flip that now and persuade us that he's the answer to our problems is beyond me.

I seriously doubt that Trump's popular appeal will outlast his Presidential Campaign. Which would tend to argue against a "cultish" nature in his support.

Personally, my impression is that Trump has garnered some appeal by telling people what they want to hear: That immigrants and sneaky Chinese are taking all our jobs. That the country is going to hell. That he'll get the Mexican Government to pay for a wall. These may be, in some strange fashion, comforting to the people who choose to believe them. But once the campaign is over Trump will lose the soapbox on which he's been spouting them.

He won't be able to raise money. And I doubt he'll spend the next three years paying for his Travelling Medicine Show out of his own pocket.

Donald Trump's personal appeal? He gained a certain following from his Apprentice Show. But his statements on the campaign trail have probably cost him support overall. And I suspect that being a losing candidate is going to cost him at least some amount of credibility amongst those who are supporting him now.

I suspect that a lot of the people supporting Trump at this stage are doing so more out of dislike for Hillary Clinton than anything else. Not that there aren't a lot of people supporting Hillary Clinton out of a similar disdain for Trump.

Trump and Hillary both have cult-like followers.

vrDrew, it looks to me that he's talking about issues that other pols haven't addressed, and the ones he's picked out to harp on are not "business as usual" platitudes. That he's wrong in some of his ideas is irrelevant. Joe Sixpack is POed at the shaft he's gotten from business as usual.

The easiest example is "th' wall". Don't need it. Existing law, if enforced, can deal with the problems of illegals. Carter used a 1952 law in 1979, e.g., to kick out some 15,000 Iranians. SFAIK, enforcement of the laws about hiring illegals are still on the books. So, enforce them and really chap Tyson Food's butt. :)

Gigglesnort: Hillary, OTOH, is just the usual duckbill platitudinous. :D

I plowed behind a horse when I was a kid. The drawback is that the view never improves. However, in later years, I was prepared--armored, as it were--when I first saw VIP politicos at a campaign rally.

'Rat, i love you. We don't always agree here, but you are refreshingly straight-forward. Always love your contributions. In this case, I can't fault your reasoning in what I quoted...
