Dallas tornado sirens are on. For at least twenty minutes. At midnight, no wind, no rain. It seems system has been hacked. A friend in Dallas also reports that 911 is down.

It's possible 911 is down due to too many callers... perhaps calling to find out what is going on.

Update, it seems that the problem is going on in several cities.

Update 2: sirens blasted for at least the times. Unclear if tornado sirens or civil alert sirens (nuclear/military emergency)

Didn't the Dallas metro area suffer some 911 blip a few weeks ago?

So much for spending trillions of dollars on homeland security. Maybe another trillion would help make sirens work at correct times.......nah just spend it on more body groping at airports.

Boy oh boy do I ever feel safe.........NOT.

Sirens are handled by the local FD, not homeland security. Two different worlds

I thought the NWS controlled tornado sirens.

So the trillion dollars we spent didn't even cover sirens?

Man I really feel cheated now!

NWS communicates with the various agencies, local departments make the final decision based both on observation and NWS.

That would be stupid. Sirens are a local matter.

It seems to me the worst time would be when there's actually an emergency and they malfunction.

Maybe it was a social science experiment... set off air raid sirens and see what people do in respons given no apparent threat of tornado or natural disaster. I'm sure it would show we are very unprepared.

Having spent some time in Israel, particularly 2012, I can say I am thankful I don't live in a place accustomed to air raid sirens meaning incoming military threat.

it's not creepy to me at all. I found it kind of funny actually. Sounded like a sad whale, or maybe a whale going through the mating ritual. ;)

If that's the normal sound, that's really odd. It sounds broken.
