I have run every developer beta for the past 5 years, at least.

This first developer beta is by FAR the most stable first iOS beta ever released - in fact, it's far more stable than the iOS 13 GM that SHIPPED last year.

Apple clearly learned from the complaints over last years stability - and granted, there aren't really many new features this year.

But that being said after a few days of heavy use, and of course, install at your own risk but...

I would say this first developer beta is more than stable enough for your daily driver.

Nah. Not yet because each beta breaks something. Maybe the keyboard not working, FaceTime being disabled....just too many risks. The last beta before GM? Then I’ll consider it.

I recall similar things being said about iOS 12 betas.

Yeah, my keyboard glitching was purely graphical ( in blink shell, every time type it flashes whole keyboard a bit ), the search stopping working, and some anomalies with widget repositioning are only 'real' bugs I've encountered thus far.

It’s promising that people seem to think it’s very stable.
However year after year I’m shocked at how stupid people are by installing it on their primary devices and being annoyed that some things don’t work.

For example, Starling bank are a Fin-tech bank in the UK. Since the developer BETA of iOS 14 was released late on Monday UK time, they have been inundated on Twitter from users who can’t access their accounts as the app crashes. They then have the audacity to say that they are only pointing it to them and not having a go, or are worried about it not working when iOS 14 is fully released.
Why is it their fault that their app doesn’t work on an OS that was only announced hours ago and won’t be released for 3 months?
Also do they seriously expect that the developers at one of the largest Fin-tech companies in the world aren’t aware and aren’t working on iOS 14?

The ones who have the ability to install betas now are app developers! I wouldn't say they are that stupid to not realize that app crashing behavior on their device has something to do with them just installing a first betta software!! Yeah, if someone who is not a developer and pays the fee just to install e beta software that it will be released to the general public for testing in a couple of weeks anyway, I would say that is stupid. I do use iOS public betas every year and I fully except that it won't behave normally until all bugs have been ironed, and I am fine with that.

It is a case of people having a developers account to gain early access. All good developers would realise that this BETA is to help them build apps for iOS14, not to test who’s apps don’t work on a BETA. They would also have a device specifically to run the iOS14 BETA, and for it not to be their primary device.
It happens every year. Even the public BETA is so Apple can have people test to see if the new features are working well, and to distinguish which reviews are likely going to be people annoyed at things they have no control over, like individual 3rd party apps not working.

On my iPhone 11 Pro Max and 12.9-inch 2018 iPad Pro, I'm shocked how stable it is, snappy, and haven't had one app not work. I even took the plunge to install watchOS 7 on my Series 4, every app I use works. I usually wake up in the morning with 90% after 8 hours sleeping, the past two mornings it's been 83% from it being fully charged when I go to bed.

The OS is stable, but do check whether your favourite app (especially banking/finance apps) are working before upgrading your only phone.

I woudlnt go as far as to say that its better than the most recent version of ios 13 but I will say that it feels great for a first beta. I recall that mark gurman said that the ios team is going to focus on performance and bugs in ios 14...I think we are starting to see the fruits of their labor.

Every app I have on my 11 Pro Max and 2018 iPad Pro works. Didn't think my banking app would work, but thankfully it does. I've been using betas on all my iPhones and iPads since the 2007 OG iPhone upgrade to iPhone OS 2. iPad and iOS 14 beta 1 is the most stable release I've seen. Every app works, no crashes, no spontaneous reboots, and performance is snappy. The only device that took a battery hit is my Apple Watch Series 4 running watchOS 7. I usually wake up with around 90% after 8 hours of sleep, last 2 days 83%. Apple did a great job with these betas.

Nah, no need to pay the fee. A simple Google search will get you the profile for iOS 14 Developer Beta. While I normally wait for the public beta, I really wanted Scribble in time for online training I’m attending today so I took the risk on one of my iPads.

That said, yes, it is stupid to expect everything to work well right off the bat. I certainly wouldn’t install it on primary devices.

One of the reasons I run betas is to test if it’s okay to install new firmware on production hardware. Iirc, I held off updating from iOS 12 to 13 until 13.2 or 13.3 stable was released because I had major issues with earlier iOS 13 versions and early app support.

If things continue running smoothly, iOS 14 looks like it’s gonna be a day one install for me similar to iOS 12.

Running it on a 8+ since yesterday, it's very stable to me. None of my apps have been crashing and I've only noticed some minor graphical glitches here and there as well as some occasional sluggishness.
Same only had two things that could have been bad, but a restart fixed them both, and they haven't returned:

1. Added weather widget and I was stuck on a screen with just the widget. Couldn't get back to the home screen doing anything short of the restart.
2. Woke up to a message that a Cellular Update Failed and had no service. Service was back after the restart.

Been running it for about a day now, only issues I ran into were Airplay related and that the widget doesn't update (specifically on the activity circles) overnight.
