What happened to his original heart? Did they have to build a sarcophagus around it, like with Chernobyl?

I think the priest who ripped it out, ate it while it was still beating.

It was funny when Dick Cheney lacked a heartbeat. This news makes me sad :(.

As an organ donor, I'd rather my donated organs be used to prolong the life of someone who would use the second chance to do good in the world.

That was kind of my cold hearted initial response too. Politics or personal opinions aside of the guy, but he's old and fat. He's probably not going to live very long anyway. Something else will probably just fail him. I don't think I'd go as far to say there should be a max age limit on transplant recipients, but I kind of think the elderly should have a lower priority if there's someone else in need.

How much did this cost? Who picked up the tab this medical procedure? Will people's health care premiums go up because of this?

Ol' Dick should post videos of his operation online so the folks paying the bill can all watch!

Old, fat people tend to be the ones who get heart transplants. Younger people who need them are somewhat in the minority. Cheney, though, is pretty well off, and there seem to be a fair number of supporters who probably think he did well by the country and deserves to live. I just think it was unfair of them to off the Tin Man so that Cheney could live a few more years.

Let's hope he recovers soon and lives many more years. He has a lot of good ideas and good work to contribute still. He's a smart man with a big healthy heart. :p

    Big heart? That's not healthy...

Cheney is currently recovering from a heart transplant to treat end-stage heart failure. He probably did had a "big" heart. But I trust his new heart is normal sized.

An enlarged heart is a symptom of an underlying disorder that is causing the heart to work harder than normal. The heart fails to pump blood effectively and this can lead to congestive heart failure.

Dick Cheney And The Very Expensive Disease -- Heart failure is one of the very most expensive diseases for Medicare, costing $33 billion a year...

Between this and your thread title, you are definitely in the running for best posts of the year.

What I think is even more hilarious is that, when Cheney's health insurance company heard that he needed a transplant, their first reaction was to cancel his policy. Then they realized they couldn't, because of some kind of law that was passed a couple of years back. I forget the name....

(Okay, I totally made up that last paragraph.

Except for the part about the law.)

I said big HEALTHY heart. Given that healthy hearts do vary in size, his might be among those that are above average in size (though still considered healthy).
