This is complicated so will try and give you the readers digest version.

I used migration assistant during the setup of my Mac Studio base. I migrated the info from my M1 iMac and that went smoothly. I then shutdown the iMac and put it aside for a few days. When I went back to start getting the iMac ready to sell, two issues cropped up.

1. Could not connect to the internet. Wifi was working, I had an IP address with all the correct info and my Eero router showed it as connected to the internet, BUT nothing would connect, not Safari, not Firefox, not mail, not icloud, nothing would connect.

2. Photos was completely gooberd. No photos would show up even though the photos library was there with 9GB+ of data. I tried repairing the library and that appeared to work until I restarted the iMac (troubleshooting) and again, no photos would show up and it was trying to download updates to photos and of course, with nothing able to connect, no joy, no photos.

Luckily I bought the iMac with the ethernet connection and that DID work so was able to completely erase and reformat the SSD and reinstall Monterey.

But I am scratching my head. Any thoughts?
 
did you assign your imac its own IP address? If so maybe migration assistant copied the network settings and when you powered up your imac it was having issues connecting to the network because the IP address was already in use? Don't know about your photos.

I wouldn't over-worry about this.
Wifi didn't work... so... you connected via ethernet... and that DID work.

Mission accomplished.

No, the router assigns a different IP address to each device.
 
Maybe your Macs now have the same name and that causes confusion. Try changing the name of one of them in the system preferences under sharing.

It’s quite a shot in the dark though.

Maybe? But since the ethernet connection worked and I was able to erase and reinstall, we will never know. BUT, after the reinstall I was able to network them and share files over wifi.
