Did something really dumb (resetting root password)...

So I forgot my iPhone root password.

Can this be reset in any way?

When I try "passwd" on the Terminal (on the phone) I'm told "can't create lock file."

Does a firmware reinstall reset this? I'm not opposed to going that far if it's the only option.
