Apparently he's so stupid he's not aware of the concept of Northern and Southern hemispheres, and that when it's Summer up here it's Winter down under.

Hard to take any of the climate deniers (idiots) seriously when they make comments like this. Or like Trump saying there's no global warming because there's a cold snap because he's too stupid to understand the difference between weather and climate.

When all of the data isn't on your side I guess you have to resort to stupid arguments like we see Dinesh doing here.

    For the 50th million time...

    Gore is not a scientist
    AOC is not a scientist
    Trump is not a scientist

Why are you getting your science information from non-scientists? worse, politicians appealing to their base? Do you get electricians to perform operations on you? Do you let lawyers fix your broken sewage pipe? Seriously, it is the height of dumb to do this.

OK, So here is the actual graph from the whole "12 years to apocalypse ROLF" nonsense. AOC doesn't understand it either, which is why you shouldn't listen to her on this subject (or any other subject for much the same reason). Anyway...

This is from the IPCC report here

You will notice an orange line in the middle at 1.5 degrees of warming that is the probability window of action in which we will reach 1.5 degrees of warming. Notice its a window not a single date like the sarcastic comments suggest. Now that much-publicised lower end of that was in 12 years from 2017, but the higher end is ~2050. So some time within that time estimate it is of high probability we will reach 1.5 degrees of warming.

The rest of this graph explores three scenarios for carbon reduction. Each with its own probability off to the right, as you can see the result of doing nothing will result in a flip of a coin if we avoid it long term or not. But reducing carbon emissions has a greater possibility of stopping 1.5 degrees of warming.

So why do we care, the last 1 degree of warming hasn't been so bad right? Well, No, but let's say you are right. Why not a 0.5 degree or 2 or three? Well, the effects are not a straight line, many things are exponential in their effect. There is a lot to unpack, but if you want a quick brief I suggest you go here. This group has done a great job of collating papers and turning it into something a bit more digestible.

So I hope that clears up why posting assinine "Don't worry AOC says the world is going to end in 12 years ROLF", telegraphs you as a person who has read nothing against their own position, and inexcusably ignorant.

Well, I am a scientist actually, published on the topic of carbon sequestration. But of that, you will have to take my word. As I have no intention of doxing myself in today's political climate. The information on climate change is out there and has been distilled for every level of understanding. From kids through to policymakers and climate change scientists. You can go as deep as you require. But your comments suggest you don't even bother to look, hence you keep trotting on sarcastic sound bites and are misrepresentative of whats being presented.

You are familiar with how representative governments work, and why governments have scientific organisations like NOAA, NASA, CSIRO, Geological surveys etc? Its because governments need experts who are objective and provide information vital to their country. These bodies advise politicians that are not experts in everything, so they can make good governing decisions with the information at hand. The problem comes when governments ignore the findings of their own independent bodies to appeal to a tribal base. Such is the case with climate change denial.

Who gets to decide what is done?

you, the voter. every single voter. hence. "Democracy"

if the bulk of the population... the plurality of it, votes in a party/ politician that wants to implement a tax, than sorry, the nation has spoken and the tax is the desired solution.

the problem is, you don't care. We've had this conversation enough times, in which everything has been explained to you, how the tax is supposed to work, how other options were outright rejected.

you also refuse to come to the table in this discussion with ANY solution to the environmental problem. Your opinion has bee noted time and time again as "I don't care and don't want to pay for it". Which I'm sorry, you're on the minority and losing side of the environmental issue. So unfortunately for you, the desired outcome of "doing nothing" is not the one that the majority of the country wants.

65% of the US population believes the US is not doing nearly enough to tackle the environment issue. https://news.gallup.com/poll/1615/environment.aspx

So yeah, the population of the US has spoken and the majority are willing to do something.

The science on the issue is pretty conclusive. https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence is a good place to start researching it. Looking at exaggerated hyperbolic claims made by politicians definitely isn't.

It's a good indication. depends on who makes it a campaign platform and what they promise.

But that's the very point of a democracy.

First you say we shouldn't believe politicians, and I agree with that. Science isn't exactly their forte. But when presented with scientific facts based on evidence, you say they have a secret agenda? Seriously?

I find it fascinating that right wing circle is most knowledgeable when it comes to global warming.

Oh god, you don't believe NASA is "in on the climate scam" as well do you. Ok, once again you are wrong. NASA doesn't get a blank cheque and told "go have fun". Nasa requests funding to congress for certain classes of missions and ongoing programs from previous fiscal years. Everything is open for you the taxpayer to read. https://www.nasa.gov/news/budget/index.html

NASA may request money for say a moon mission. But it's up to the president and congress to green light that depending on budget constraints. NASA frequently doesn't get the funding to do everything they wish. Missions are competitive. Discovery-class missions are competitive, and not all of them fly.

Ultimately it is congress and the president who decided how much funding NASA gets. Not the other way around.

no, I say that no matter what the scientist say the politicians will do as they see fit. politicians LOVE money, here in Kommiefornia our gas tax goes to EVERYTHING the politicians want and it's not enough no matter how much you give them.

see above, NASA can request whatever they want, the politicians hold the purse strings and will do as they see fit.
