Does it matter? One of the benefits of the aluminum case is it can dispense some heat through the body of the machine to work its fans a bit less. If it gets warm without you holding it I'm not sure the problem.

Or is the issue a question of will the fans kick on when you're using it that way? As you prefer it to be silent?

Closing the lid does not significantly affect heat dissipation. As long as air flow is unobstructed by your vertical stand, thermal performance should be basically unaffected compared to the same use in the open configuration.

Yes, with the newer models the air venting at hinge now always goes under the hinge towards back so should be significantly better than the older design where the vents were pointed towards the hinge from inside.
