do apple still make power supply units for 2011 imac and how much do they cost? and if its the fans?

my 2011 imac is going to have to go into apple, I'm guessing its the power supply although maybe not. basically what happens is it just restarts every minute or two. for a couple of months I had a good but weird solution which was if I managed to get steam open, civilization VI open and a save game open before it restarted then it would stay on for weeks. must be something to do with a sensor saying somethings wrong rather than a massive problem in that case as it must be that the computer is deciding to restart and is blocked by Civ VI.

its not the internal hard drive as I bought a thunderbolt SSD. the graphics card was replaced by apple 2 years ago as was the screen.

I'm leading to the power supply but techtools does flag up that the fan isn't working on the internal drive, so I normally unmount that.

    whats it likely to cost.

its not looking good, paradoxically because the hardware test says everything is hunky dory.

the engineer has been really sound about it, basically he says he thinks its the power supply but since it passed the test he cant confirm it. and since apple don't make the parts for it any more he cant order a PSU to see what happens.

best he can do is keep it for a day, open it, clean it out, unplug and replug everything, and see what happens. if its still broke his advice is its not worth throwing money at It because of the uncertainty of whats wrong. I could get a 2nd hand PSU and fit it only to find the same problem and maybe its the logic board, or just the cabling or one of a million situations.

Bottom line is seven years is a pretty fair run for a computer. I know this will be inundated with those using 2008 iMacs etc., and I still use by original LC running system 7.0.1 with my Apple camera.

Power Supply Units, Fans and other spares for the 2011 iMac are widely accessible on eBay.
Expect a refurbished Power Supply Unit to set you back around £60

You do not specify if you have the 21.5" or 27" model so I have included links here to iFixit tutorials for fitting them on both

I have a 21.5" mid 2011 iMac still in daily use and it remains as solid with the excellent Intel Quad Core i5 Sandy Bridge CPU. Seven years is not at all old.

Hmm have you checked the temperature on the system?

Sounds to me like the Thermal Paste on the CPU has dried
up and gone away. Like @davidmartindale just said it sure
appears to be some kind of thermal issue.

the engineer said it was the logic board but I'm not sure if he was actually certain or just guessed. bit the bullet and bought a new machine. might think about getting a 2nd hand logic board if I can get one cheap, or I might try to sell the bits separate for parts.
