In a van down by the river
In order to attain the much sought title of "Apple Nerd" here on MR, is owning an Apple Watch necessary as part of what many consider to be the typical Apple nerd package (Mac, iPhone, and iPad)?

What say you, MR?

Just one? Are you kidding? At least 4, a dozen Apple TVs and a couple of iBooks at least :p

Joking aside, if you care enough, I don't care what gear you have or don't have. Or want for that matter. I love the Watch and I love the Mac. I honestly don't care that much about iPads and iPhones though I do use them and prefer them over competing offerings. But I think what matters the most if you want to carry that title is just that you believe in it yourself, right? :)
To me it'd matter more if you know who I'm talking about when I say Craig, Phill, The Wizard of Woz, Forstall, Bertrand Serlet, etc. Or community folk like Rene Ritchie.

Or if you've put your Apple stickers on one of your guitars, have the song Steve Jobs by Jonathan Mann in your iTunes Library - sorry - Music catalogue, and while writing an operating system for university instead of looking to Linux to see how other operating systems do their kernel segment descriptors to satisfy the x86 architecture you search up Apple's open source repo... Just to name a few, totally random things I would think would qualify :p

^ This guy. Last year when I asked what was involved with getting a Java app working on 64-bit, he grabbed it and fiddled with it for what seemed like days on end. I still use the resulting app too!

Was that Sears? Wasn't Namebench was it? Think that was a Python thing.... Think it was Sears, haha

I don’t think so. I was NEVER a watch guy in my life. I just hate jewelry of any kind on my wrist or fingers. And with my iPhone always with me, I didn’t need a watch to tell time. So when the Apple Watch first came out, I said I would never get one. Well, 6 yrs later & i just bought my first one. A nike series 6 GPS only. I had a health scare earlier this year & as I was getting back in shape, I figured it would be helpful to monitor my heartbeat & O2 levels as well as other things. So I got it for health purposes. And I have to say, it’s awesome.

It’s a really really well made product both in hardware and especially software. They really nailed the “Joy” aspect of using tech.
And to supplement your health story, owning an Apple Watch actually did help me in that regard. When my Apple Watch caused me to realise I sometimes had a resting heart rate of 110BPM+ I went see a doctor and was diagnosed with an extremely overactive thyroid. My metabolism was out of whack. Nearly medicated out of it now :)

Apple newbie: iPhone owner
Apple User: iPhone and Mac or iPad owner
Apple Enthusiast: iPhone and any two of the following: Mac, Ipad, Watch, AirPods
Apple Diehard: iPhone, Mac, iPad, Watch, AirPods
Apple Nerd: Only requires purchasing an ATV and paying each month for Arcade and ATV+ :)

Well, I own at least one each of the following:
iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods Pro, Apple TV, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, HomePod Mini and AirTag.

Does that make me a "full-fledged Apple Nerd"? No. It makes me an Apple Enthusiast.

Currently I own an Apple Watch, iPhone 12 Pro, iMac, MacBook Air, Apple TV 4K, AirPods Pro, Beats Studio3 Headphones. That doesn’t even include all the accessories like the iPhone MagSafe Charger, MagSafe Leather Wallet & MagSafe Case, as well AirTags.

Previously owned items include a MacBook Pro, Apple TV 3rd Gen, Apple TV HD, original iPad, iPad mini, iPad Pro & Beats Solo3 Headphones.

I guess I am an Apple Enthusiast as well. My first Apple product was an iPod back in 2003 and then a white MacBook in early 2007.

I really want to buy an Apple Watch but I don't wear a watch and I don't see the point of a smartwatch unless for health reasons. I also don't want one more thing to constantly charge.

I know these are just excuses and I need to just buy one to make Tim Apple happy.

I used to think the same before buying one. It doesn’t require a lot of charge with normal usage by the way and as you get to see the benefit of the watch it’ll make you realise that health is just one aspect of it. The sheer convenience of getting things done without worrying about getting to your phone all the time is just brilliant. Apple wallet is probably my most used app on the watch closely followed by the timer and the workout app.

I don't think I've used my physical wallet even once after getting my watch. Well, for payments at least. For ID cards and such I have. - But for paying for things I've always just used the watch. Right there on your wrist. Very convenient. It unlocks my iMac when I'm near and when I get a notification I can immediately judge if it's something that requires further attention or can be ignored without pulling out my phone and getting distracted regardless. It's great :p

You’re not an Apple Nerd until you restore a 68K mac or two and get them hooked up and talking with your iPad and Mac.

Looks like you have crossed over to Apple nerd status. Congrats on the watch. It's my favorite Apple device. :D

Buy one and give it a go for 13 days. I have a feeling you will really dig it once you experience the power of the Apple Watch. :D. Don't you want to reach Apple nerd status? :p

Add that to the fact that you spend time on MR (as a Contributor) and you get Apple nerd. :)

I held out for ages on the AW. Didn’t see the point.
But last year I decided to try the AW. Couldn’t have been happier with the results. I’ve gotten into exercise in a way I never have. Lost a stone and a half.
I’m the lightest and fittest I have ever been. Apple Pay on the AW is so convenient. Especially with Coronavirus.

By the way if your going to throw around titles, Apple fanboy is the one you want to aspire to! ;)

What say you, MR?

1. Apple stock
2. All current Apple devices
3. Selfies with Tim and Hair Force at WWDC
4. Regular tweets and posts about how Apple can do (and does) no wrong
5. Extra points if you have all Apple hardware ever made.

I believe if you are able to achieve these, you will become the de facto Apple God to all the Apple fanatics amongst us.

I must ask, though, what has prompted this?

Touche', sir. I can't argue with that retort.
