The whole sleep process is so terribly implemented on the Apple Watch anyway, I will begrudgingly have it on and use it over the excellent Autosleep app but I also need to add some irritating focus mode to even get wrist readings? I don’t need this rubbish limiting the features of my device - do I REALLY have to activate this annoying focus mode every day just to get a wrist temperature reading?

Looks so.

I really can’t understand how sleep is implemented so badly on the watch. It’s abysmal and needs a total rework to just automatically detect your sleep. Who sticks to the strict ‘I sleep at exactly XXX and wake at exactly XXX’ ideal Apple expect from us, if you nap outside of this period it doesn’t count at all unless you manually tell it you’re about to go to sleep which isn’t something most people are going to do I’m sure. Madness.

And if you happen to sleep later than your sleep schedule, then that sleep is not counted. My normal wakeup time is 5:30, but I slept this morning until 8:am. The sleep apps says I got up at 5:30. Everyone is correct: the sleep process is terrible.

Just put it in sleep mode manually right before going to bed. No schedule needed. Couldn‘t be easier.

Sleep tracking is the worst part of apple watch, other ways i find it as the best and superior product of apple.
I need a smartwatch, not sportwatch, garmin is not my thing. I'm phone hopper between system ios and android (iphones and samsung note/ultra), the main reason i come back to apple as a daily driver is how superior the watch is over the galaxy watches.
But there's is a big annoyance - sleep tracking. Galaxy watch detect it automatically - also naps etc. and no need to stay on sleep focus or what's embarrassing forcing myself to have set wake up alarm for each day. Even at weekend if i want sleep whatever time i wake up is fine. To omit this limitations for weekend i set alarm for like 10-11 am which is ridiculous.
Who the hell invented this sick workout for sleep tracking?
Asked friends with garmins and huawei watches - all other smartwatches measure and track sleep by default and full automatucally. Other watches take datas from their sensors like gyroscope, heart rate, pulse etc.
Who is responsible fot the dumbass sleep tracking implementation on apple watch?
My main suspect is Siri, can't imagine any human being so prone to be sleeping in real life.
It's obvious launching sleep tracking shoudln't take place - it should just work in background.
Is there any third app working like auto sleep and naps detection?
Thanks in advance.
Slleep tracking and lack of logic drive me crazy and piss me off, sucks. The worst feature implementation i've ever experienced

OK, just how do you put it in sleep mode manually? And do you do it on the Watch on the phone?

And here's another question for you guys. Making up names here... The name of my Watch is "ABC123" on both the Watch and in the Watch app on my iPhone. However, if I go under Data Sources & Access under Sleep in the Health app on the phone it shows the Watch name to be "123ABC". How do I change the name to match the actual Watch name? The only thing I see that might work is to wipe out all the sleep data and start over, which I do not want to do. Thanks.

I do it on the Watch. In control center (push side button to get there) tap on the little moon and then select sleep.

(I also select the little „masks“ symbol to also enable theater mode, which means the screen will remain dark and only light up when you tap on it or scroll the crown.)

If you do it your way, then does it cut off all phone calls? As much as I hate it, I need to be able to take calls 24/7. Thanks.

By default, yes, but you can customize this in the settings on your phone.

i agree that retaining sleep data under that name is important.
no need to delete that the data for the time when the Watch was named that.
when i changed the name of my Watch, the new name for my Watch then appeared after a few minutes in the Health app and listed in Data Sources. and then you can edit the position of the current name to be on top of the list (no need to do this last bit, but for consistency of naming i do it).
anyway, it should work and did work for me as above.

I turn on sleep mode on my watch when I go to bed. When I look at my sleep stats in the morning, it invariably includes time before I went to bed when I was watching TV. Granted I'm not moving around a lot and I'm pretty relaxed. But I'm not asleep. On the other hand, if I sleep longer than my sleep schedule, that actual sleep isn't counted. Silly, stupid way to implement this.

Typically I buggered it up and managed to delete all of my sleep data. No big deal as I keep track of my sleep just for curiosity.

I also bought AutoSleep. Now my Data Sources are listed Watch first, AutoSleep second, the Health app third and iPhone fourth. Any recommendation as to which Data Source should go first?

The Sleep App recorded four hours, 18 minutes last night, whereas AutoSleep shows three hours even. Big difference.

I did not add any specific people since one of the calls could be from someone not in my Contacts. But then I did set it up under the little arrow next to People to allow calls from Everyone.

I guess what bugs me is I think the design should be to allow Sleep to be activated from one location, logically the Health app. And then control phone calls via the Phone app. The functions provided by Focus I'm sure appeal to lots of folks. I'm just one who doesn't need them.
