"T.V. only softens the brain, like a ripe banana." - Alex Baldwin @ Hulu Commercial

So, do you watch T.V.? Do you just watch news? Do you just watch "educational" programming, like Discovery and Nat Geo, which, both, sadly, have been polluted with modern crap, for lack of a better word.

I only watch news and occasionally Discovery / Nat Geo when something interesting is on, i.e. Locked Up Abroad or whatnot.

I do fancy Seinfeld and occasionally The Office, but mainstream television, I believe, is horrible. I honestly cannot watch "regular" television without being shocked by something or disgusted.

Recently, I've accidentally stopped at like burrito/ food eating competitions, documentaries/ weight loss shows which were obviously staged and included a lot of drama/ acting, documentaries which also seemed staged, I mean, the list goes on. I'm horrified that people can actually watch this stuff. The View and other daytime programming too! I'm well aware many women over 60 watch these shows and the hosts are not only very fake, but have extreme views which I have a hard time agreeing with, let alone listening to. I don't want to bring politics into this...

Anyway, I'm rambling and typing very quickly, so some of my thoughts above may seem jumpy.

    Do you watch TV?

I can see some people becoming very defensive of their television sets. :(

Yes, but on Mac Rumors, the argument will be LCD vs Plasma or cable vs satellite, not anything political ;)

I watch it, though not commonly on the TV itself. I prefer to have full seasons of stuff after it airs.

Some of my favourite shows are The O.C., The Office, Gossip Girl, Dexter, Monk, and NCIS (i suppose i have a wide range of likes :D)

I just find television series so much more captivating than something like a movie. There's just so much time for characters to develop and such, and it can be so much more in depth.

I don't let it get in the way of my studies and stuff. I'm a 4.0 student, so i really can't say that television has harmed my brain too much :D

I also ****ing hate the news. Don't turn that trash on when i'm around, thank you :)

I think it's nice because you're made aware of what's happening around you. Even if it's just for 10 minutes a day. And, I see someone is already trying to bring politics into this. Local news works too and generally it's neutral because they're reporting about events like homicides, fires and accidents, and occasionally good things like people giving back to the environment or whatnot...

I have EyeTV and have it turned on most of the time I'm at the computer and not really having to focus on something. I rarely watch something with my full attention, though.

    I haven't owned a TV in about 5 years - so obviously I don't watch very much.

Despite this, I am amazed at how pervasive TV shows can be in culture, as I am still casually aware of some shows/characters/developments, even though I've never seen a show or indeed watched a particular channel.

I do watch movies, however, and the occasional TV show (on the interweb) that has been recommended. I also watch a lot of BBC documentaries - good stuff.

There is an old (70's) book called Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television which brings up some very compelling points as to why TV is a bad thing, regardless of particular content. I do recommend, even if I don't personally watch it mostly because I just don't find it a good use of time.

I just got satellite service activated, after a bit over a year without any service. I got it mainly because of sports. I tried to go without it last football season, but it drove me crazy. I was able to take care of most of the shows I liked on the internet, but I couldn't handle the football withdrawal again this season. :)

I watch the History Channel (when they actually show history stuff, which is rare these days), Military Channel, Travel Channel, and Discovery, and sports stuff, of course.

At its peak I probably dedicate about 2 hours to TV a week. I watch BBC News whilst eating. But for non news I watch the BBC stuff like Robin Hood, Doctor Who, Casualty and such. But none of them are on now and I've already seen Outnumbered series 2.

    Back to DVDs I go.
