And that is the best argument for having two screen sizes, obviously one size will never fulfil the needs of all.
I have always wondered why do we have multiple screen size MacBooks, iMacs, Apple monitors, iPods and recently iPads, but not iPhones, it just doesn't make sense...

Great post, couldn't have put it better myself.

Now we just need Apple to stop being stubborn and realize that.

NO, they dont. It would be great for people who actually want a huge screen as far as more options are concerned. Other than that, its not necessary, IMHO the huge screen thing is kinda dumb, but thats just my thought. I have an iPad for that.

Apple has become so large, conservative and slow, they appear to be struggling to keep up with Samsung. While it could be said that Samsung is also a larger and more diverse company, but they have more determination to be highly nimble and open to new changes that fall far beyond, out of Apples realm.

Times have changed and it's time for Apple to choose. Are they willing to use their resources skill & experience, are they willing to become motivated? Or are the massive profits they have good enough for them to play second and let the stronger more youthful company lead?

Apple obviously has chosen. It has worked, unfailingly, in the past. And it will work tomorrow. If you think that Apple has anything to learn from Samsung, I think you should take a shower. I mean, really. The number of experts on this forum who are not employed by Apple, yet see the future so clearly, is absolutely mind-boggling.

We do have multiple screen sizes for iPhones.

No we don't. They are still selling the 4S which is outdated hardware which happens to have a smaller screen. We want a LARGER screen, not a smaller one! Having multiple screens is having two alternatives of new modern hardware, such as HTC who has manufactured the HTC One and the HTC One Mini. Here's a joke: the HTC One Mini has a 4.3 inch screen and is extremely portable. Pretty embarrassing for Apple.

If only I could put the iOS in any one of those, I would not be so tied up in waiting for Apple to wake up.

Changing the screen was a huge deal for Apple, so I would count on the same 4" size for the 5S, 6 and 6S, but you never know, Apple might enlarge the screen for the 6, or offer two sizes. You honestly never truly know what Apple has coming for us. To me that's what makes it sort of exciting.

I have never truly desired a bigger screen. Would it be nice? Maybe. I'm so used to my 3.5" 4S that even a 5 screen feels odd. That's going to be the weirdest thing if I do decide to upgrade for the 5S, the screen size.

Apple is doing fine, I don't think they are too worried about keeping customers. So many people are "locked in" and have been since the beginning. Just because YOU think they need to make bigger screens to keep iPhones hot doesn't mean it's true. Think about the average user.

That's some crazy logic. :D

Yes but until sales doesn't meet their expectations Apple will continue to do what they are doing. At the end it's all about numbers.

Take a look at Samsung, they realized they don't need to change **** after the success they had with the S3.

Exactly

People don't realize that the reason the other manufacturers keep making major changes every year is because they can't figure out what works. Apple felt like they figured it out with the iPhone 4 and that's why the iPhone 5 and 5S are based off that design. The S4 didn't change much at all from the S3 because Samsung found a successful design. The companies are trying to make profit. All of them pretty wish they can do what Apple does.

Popularity of displays larger than the iPhone have everything to do with the present.

The future? You brought that up... Perhaps as a diversion.

I think Samsung has overall device down pat now.

Think about it. Apple makes the S variant of the previous model to maximize profit by using older hardware. That works for them and is obviously good business as far as profit goes.

Samsung although small completely redesigned the S4. It would have made no difference if it was an obvious redesign or small redesign it still cost them money and they aren't utilizing the case or screen from the previous generation.

One of those two companies is making a product that's benefiting the consumer over their financial gain. An engineer said, "hey, we can fit a bigger screen on a smaller phone but we'll need to start from the ground up."

We ended up with a slightly smaller phone with a slightly bigger screen. That's a win in my book, also something I wish Apple would do.

Nicely stated.

Sales show that they don't need it to stay competitive (at least not right now). They will eventually though and that's when we will see them offer a larger iPhone. Probably next year's redesigned model.

Apple is already competitive in the smartphone arena. They rank as 2nd or 3rd on the most sold smartphones over the past 2 years. One of the current reasons why Apple isn't the top in terms of smartphone sales right now is due to their lack of product. They only make 1 model for high end instead of 2-3 models to suit all budgets. Apple is releasing the 5C as a low cost model and then a 5S model so they can have mid-range to high quality models covered. Another issue with the sales numbers is due to product cycle. Samsung has chosen to stagger releases of their S3, S4, S3mini, and Note 2 within 2nd quarter 2012 to 2nd quarter 2013. This makes sales of their units stronger overall since Android users tend to upgrade more quickly due to hardware/form factor changes. 4th quarter of 2013 will determine whether or not Apple has made the right decisions. The other thing to consider in terms of sales numbers is that Apple hasn't released any phone since the iPhone 5 which even though has a current 55 million unit sales number is still lower than Galaxy S4 sales but higher than Galaxy S3 sales. With 2 models hitting at the same time, the sales numbers may be very different 2013 Q4.

Google just leaked the Nexus 5 during their Android 4.4 (kitkat) announcement. Google is clearing Nexus 4 stock (8gig already sold out) and most likely move the Nexus 5 into the $300/$350 range off contract. Apple is going to look stupid releasing a $649 4" iPhone 5s vs a $300 1920x1080p 5" Nexus 5.
And let's not forget about the Note 3, LG G2 and Sony Z1. If it wasn't for Apple's ecosystem it would be blackberry all over again. Apple needs to wake up now!!!

Apple is doing just fine. And your right it's the ecosystem everyone is attracted to. Bottom line is when I need a bigger screen I goto my iPad mini, and a lot of consumers feel the same way.

I will give Apple the 4th quarter in overall sales but come January the cycle will repeat; slow sales early next year. People have been trained to buy during the early months of a iPhone release and then wait for the next model months before it ships. And like you said Samsung staggers it's releases which is very smart; it keeps them in the news and allows them to change to market demands. And Apple better watch out for LG because the G2 is a better phone than the S4 and Htc One.

This. That's exactly what I do with my iPad mini. It's a perfect alternative. My phone does what I need it to, and so does my iPad.

I think that'd be the sweet spot. 4.5

I vote for a 4.7 or 5.0 inch top of the line iPhone and a second model with a 4.3 inch screen (just like the HTC One and HTC One Mini, that way, everyones preferences are covered). Both models need to have vastly improved screen to bezel rations to achieve a nice form factor (just like the Galaxy S4).

Ditto...I'm going with iPhone 5S because of it size, and iOS. I'm staying away from Android OS, and the larger form factor of those manufactures provide. Also included, is the mature looking solid build of the iPhone over the plastic samsung. ;). I can go anywhere I want, but the iphone has attracted me to them. It's really that simple folks
