And I mean this as a serious question. Just to clarify, I don’t mind it, and am used to it, but would obviously prefer my iPhone without it. With other manufacturers getting rid of it or making it a single punch hole, what is Apple doing? Is there a reason they aren’t getting rid of it due to technology? I’m just really curious on this as here we are 4 years later which is an eternity in the tech world and all they’ve been able to do is reduce it by 20%.

I understand it is probably difficult to do, but they’ve done nothing with Face ID since it was launched and it works the same across all devices with no improvement or added features (outside mask wearing). Is this a choice they are making because they want to or because they have to due to the technology used in faceID?

What is the deal here? I’m not complaining but just wondering why Apple can’t move past what is obviously the biggest eyesore of their beautiful phones.

Apple could do whatever they wanted but do you understand new features have to be released incrementally. If they gave us everything we ever wanted and maxed out every spec what would their be left to improve next year. Auto makers do the same thing, Toyota is notorious for incremental updates.

I don't think the hole punch would work. There's a lot more sensors involved with Face ID than a simple camera in a hole punch. It seems to me their options are to keep the notch or have a top bezel.

I know there's talk of behind the screen cameras. That still doesn't mean everything else required for Face ID will work behind the screen yet. There may also be reliability issues or quality issues with this tech not meeting Apple's standards. Perhaps even licensing issues.

this is exactly what they did with the X. When the X came out there was no Plus size. Then the following year the XS came out along with the plus size.

so this year we have less notch and next year we will have a punch hole screen!

this is just to get more people to buy their phones that's all

The only way to pack the existing 6 sensors into the front of the phone is with a top bezel (which they'll never do though it's the obvious best choice) or with a notch.
There's no way currently to put all that tech under the display and make it invisible.
FaceID is unfortunately here to stay and with it comes a lot of (notch dependent) hardware.

Of course Apple can do it and remove the notch. Other companies have already shown that it's possible.

Apple just want to do it the Apple way: upgrade bit by bit so that there's are new things to sell each year.

Nobody else has ultra-secure Face ID authentication like Apple has implemented.

The notch-less phones that do some form of face recognition to unlock, they have the most rudimentary easy-to-defeat facial recognition technology imaginable. It can be typically be defeated with a still photograph of the person.

The notch is a complete non issue to most normal users. I’ve literally never heard it even mentioned outside of this forum and Reddit. Nearly everyone I know uses an iPhone and I’ve literally never heard the notch mentioned either in a negative or positive context, it’s just a complete non issue.

The camera is not the problem, it's FaceID.

It features at least 5 different sensors that take up space. No other smartphone has such a complex and highly secure face recognition system.

LOL - My brother didn't even know what I was talking about recently when I mentioned it. He was asking about what has been changed with the IP13's. For me I see it as a compromise, I love FaceID so I can handle the notch for this reason.

I think people also forget Apple is a business that needs to generate revenue and it is not cheap to develop completely new tech. Also its not easy to shrink it once its implemented. The notch does not bother me considering the function it provides.

The notch has never really bothered me. I'd be fine if Apple got rid of it, but if they didn't.... I'd be fine as well.
