Hello!

I have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware already installed, but heard about this:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bitdefender-virus-scanner/id500154009?mt=12
I only want scanner to sometimes use - not real time. Scanner that would allow me to scan specific files - like files from external hard drive I want to put to my Mac's hard drive.

1) Can BitDefender scan single image, video and other files?
2) Is BitDefender legitimate respected software or could it mess up my system in any way?

Microsoft Security Essentials is lot better than BitDefender or AVG.

It not as good as Norton security but better than BitDefender or AVG.

If you have PC you better of with Microsoft Security Essentials or Norton.

I use BitDefender in a similar scenario as you suggest, that is, on a part-time basis and not as a real time scanner (which is not needed).

You can use “Scan a Custom Location” to scan whatever you would like.

Yes, it is legitimate software, it would not be in the App. Store if it was not. It will not mess up your system, it only runs when you want it to.

Don't be so sure. There are loads of junk and scam apps in the App Store. Do a search in the App Store for "adware" and you'll find that most of the results are scam "adware removal" apps that don't really work as advertised.

In the case of Bitdefender, that is a legit app.

That's not good news about App Store... O_O

But about BitDefender:
1) I can safely download it and run whenever I want to scan some files
2) It will not damage my system
3) It will not install malicious stuff
4) It will not spy on me, my personal files and data?

As both thomasareed and myself have stated, BitDefender is a legitimate app.

With regard to your questions:

1. Yes
2. No
3. No
4. No

As for malware detection, you are already running what most people on this forum recommend.

I have now been using Mac's for 8 years (previously I was a Windows user).......old Windows habits die hard, particularly when it comes to virus scanning etc. But, in those 8 years I have never found any malware on my system.
