I will in no way question that Japan is ahead of the US in phone features and technology. However, the US has had phones that do more than iphone. The same thing that holds true here will hold true in Japan: iPhone does it BETTER. Safari on iphone alone sells the phone.

Well I think that it will sell, and for the reason it does stuff differently, and in most cases better, then other phones.

It most likely won't sell as well as it does in the US, but thats because everywhere else as better phones(Europe, Japan, etc)

It will do well enough. It won't be the huge force it is in the U.S. but it should be able to survive in the highly competitive Japanese market. The Japanese text input method needs improvement and additional services need to be added that are common to other phones in that area. However the overall design will appeal to some Japanese consumers.

A better question would be, "can the iphone survive in Japan". I have a bunch of oriental friends, and the big thing over there right now are phones that stream tv on demand. I'm not a nay-sayer, i just wonder if the Japanese will be turned on by the iphones bells and whistles.

Moreover, I think the multi-touch interface is a HUGE deal most people gloss over. At the end of the day, everyone knows that updates to the iPhone are going to be a whole heck of a lot more impactful than "updates" to most other mobile devices out there. Just look at apps like "Sketcher". I know a "builder" friend of mine who said he would immediately get an iPhone if he could take a photo of something he's working on, scribble on the photo with his finger, and email it to a client. Simply awesome stuff.
