Does your iPhone backup take up a lot of space on your rMBP and is there a way to compress it?

The more data you have on your iPhone the more space it will consume.

I suspect you could dump it onto an external drive and move it back if you need to restore. Maybe give it a shot, what's the worst that could happen?

It takes an exactly copy if you select a secure backup.
