Yeah. They totally could just go not beg couldn't they?

    Disgusting.

Rudy Giuliani just arrested the homeless in NYC and threw them in jail- because that's so much better.

And yes, this is horrible. I am no fan of China.

Well he did that and then offered one way bus fair to leave the city for those who didn't wind up in jail. The "homeless miracle of NYC" was really just deporting the homeless to places where they would be someone else's (state) problem.

I really hate that man and all the ass kissing he receives.

Oh, he was a supreme douche to be sure.

I'm trying to understand the reasoning, "Hmm...let's arrest the homeless, that'll teach 'em not to have a home!" WTF? In what twisted world is that helpful?

eric thinks it's acceptable practice to nuke any country that doesn't chime with the good ol 'murican mantra. But you knew that.

Shouldn't a nation ask itself why the beggars are begging and what can be done that is a positive resolution to end it?

    For example...
    1) why are these people begging?
    2) what is their current situation?
    3) what is the current prognosis?
    4) how can we end this? (as in waging a war against poverty, not the poor)

We can't even address it properly here in this country. Here the poor are merely dismissed as immoral and stupid. I imagine the same goes for China.

    What are our options?

It appears that they are on the fast track to Westernization, so probably not.

    ----------

    I think that?

Care to quote where I've stated anything of the kind?

If you don't have anything, an apology would be acceptable here.

    Thanks.

He wasn't trying to help, he was merely moving bodies. That's all the homeless are to far too many people, not humans, just bodies in the way.:(

My lasting impression of San Francisco back in 2004 was the huge numbers of homeless people. The sheer numbers around Fisherman's Wharf put us off from staying to long.

I do not however condone them being put in cages.:(

The cages in this case are open. The beggars choose to be inside so they can continue to beg at the festival site. Why do they beg? Because people give them money.

I've been to events in China like this one where nothing was done to stop the beggars from "working" the crowds. They were not pleasant events.

One of the more aggressive beggars last Chinese New Year had an iPhone and stopped begging long enough to take a call right in front of us in Shanghai. He was doing quite well getting people to give him cash simply by following them down the street and repeatedly saying, "Money for food. Money for food," in Mandarin or in English depending on his target.

You forgot the protesters as well;) In America and China beggars and protesters are not all that welcome. Protesters are pretty much dealt with equally while beggars probably get a little more freedom in China.

Which definition of "slave" do you use? The witty, rhetorical, ivory tower one, or the one that is in dictionaries?
