Terrible incident in London, a fire has enveloped a large block of flats.

I imagine what its like as fire is my worst nightmare after a childhood incident when I was upstairs alone when a fire started in the Kitchen filling the house with smoke.

Thoughts are with the folks that lived in this tower block, looks absolutely dreadful on the News coverage, large loss of Life I fear.

I've seen pics and video of the fire, but haven't kept up with the news to hear more. Now is right around the time I'm turning on my NPR app to tune in to my fave stations to get the BBC feed.. is it contained? I already know it's going to be a while before they determine the cause..

It looks like something right out of a movie. Really horrible and hard to fathom how it could happen. :(

Probably not, I think that I heard that they were afraid the building might collapse.

    I know. "Towering Inferno". :(

    How horrible.

And it looks like a fairly modern building, so it should have sprinklers, right? It's not like Britain is one of these countries with lax building laws.

Edit: Just read some of sim667's links. Cripes.

The problem is a lot buildings like this predate safety laws in the UK, and were built on the cheap.

This was social housing run by the local government via by a private 'management' company (of course). As noted above, the residents raised safety concerns by the company did not respond, nor did the Council. As you might expect, the the Council is run by the Conservative Party.

Sad day, particularly as this looks like it was preventable. :(

It was refurbished last year so that isn't really an excuse. Obviously there are limits on what you can do but I think I saw somewhere that the fire alarms weren't even working.

Silly Left asking for safety regulations for the poor! Regulations kill jobs!! JOBS JOBS JOBS!

And the overwhelmingly Tory-controled media will go straight from "It's too early and painful" to "let's not talk about the past, let's discuss the future!".

Come on, don't make this political yet. It's really too soon.

Prayers to all involved, sad day.

TBH thats a pretty tasteless comment in itself.

    Unintentional, I imagine..... but still.

USAToday is reporting 6 dead and that figure is likely to rise.

Freinds of mine have freinds who are at the scene as firemen. Largely today it seems like finding and recovering the dead, so I imagine there will be more unfortunately :(

Also it seems the refurb company were deleting pages off their website at 4am this morning.

    They're cached though

I was watching some of this last night and watching them try to put water on it just seemed like a waste of time. I was also wondering about sprinklers.

The photos of the fire were terrifying. Unfortunately, as others have said, it seems likely that the death toll is going to be substantially higher than the six quote so far. Since the fire started on the second floor, it appears many people were trapped above it, with the smoke making it impossible to use the hallways or the single stairwell.

    Horrible.

It is fairly standard idiomatic English, at least I assume it isn't specifically Hiberno English but it can be hard to know. If people want to be offended because of the circumstances that is up to them.

That doesn't by default mean that its not a tasteless comment to make.

I think claiming it is tasteless is pretty much claiming its selection was related to how people died and not because it is a standard phrase.

Not much point discussing it further.
