I bought a Mac Mini off eBay recently and it didn't come with a mini-DVI to DVI adapter so having 1 VGA monitor and 1 DVI/VGA monitor, I bought a mini-DVI to DVI-I adapter and a Displayport to DVI-I adapter because I have a DVI to VGA cable that works fine from the DVI output of my G4s video card.

Neither adapter actually carries a VGA signal to my Samsung Syncmaster 913n.

It shows up in the displays preference pane so the Mac knows the monitor is attached but it simply doesn't output a VGA signal.

I specifically got DVI-I not DVI-D adapters because they carry both a digital and VGA signal so I'm at a loss as to why they don't work and I see no other option than buying a Displayport to VGA adapter.

Is there something I can do to avoid this?

I've tried both adapters with the DVI to VGA cable and neither will output to my Samsung VGA LCD but both are fine with a DVI connection.

Just because it looks like DVI-I doesn't mean the electronics are there.

Best to buy a mini-displayport to VGA adapter to solve your issue.

In the time it took you to create this thread, you could have googled the answer. Not trying to be a jerk....

I googled first but thanks for that

    The problem is beyond me.

It's DVI-I, therefore it carries both a DVI and VGA signal.

The cable is a DVI-I to VGA cable that's worked flawlessly with the DVI output of my G4s GPU for years without issue and as the Mac Mini can see the LCD but not output video to it, I wondered if it was a software issue maybe so as a last ditch attempt before I spend even more money on a Displayport to VGA adapter that'll I'll probably have a frustratingly long wait for given these 2 adapters took nearly a fortnight to arrive after I'd already received the Mac off eBay with no video adapter, I asked on here given the fact I've been registered on Mac Rumors for 11 years and the community are generally a very helpful bunch!

The connector is DVI-I but the signal Apple is providing is only DVI-D. Some old discussions were about how Apple is non-standard again.

That sounds very likely to me. I'm just going to have to get a Displayport to VGA adapter.

What you need is a digital to analog video converter that converts DVI-D to VGA (Part # SCA-DVI- ANA).
