Ok I self-identify as lefty but appreciate dialog with those on the right or centre whatever (except hardcore Nazis hate those guys as Indiana Jones said) but this is why the North American progressive left has gone off track.

Personally, I agree with the Tuvel. I really don't see the difference between either of these ideas (transgender and transracial). But it's not surprising at all to see an incoherent response from liberals because transracialism doesn't fit the "agenda".

I am surprised to see that she is the first feminist to go after the idea of transgender.

I think she is going after the idea of accepting more "genders".

    Who cares?

I invented a new color today. Blurple. It's the color of an azawakh when it reaches stage bracco.

I say invent-away, beautiful freaks and nerds.

I thought that the concept was that the gender you're born with doesn't matter.

Which makes it perfectly analogous to whatever was going on with Rachel Dolezal.

BUT it becomes an "issue" when you want benefits for your "Self" identity..............

will self identifying as "legal" keep ICE out of my back? how about if self identify my guns as registered? :D
plenty of lefties have gone over the cukoo's nest

I agree with you. I read a bit to familiarize myself with the issue (Tuvel's article can be found here) and likewise agree that race could be as fluid as gender identity. I had actually thought of that concept when I'd read an article about Rachel Dolezal recently.

But then you had to go partisan on this. From what I've seen in my 56 years is that all sides are capable of incoherent outrage. It just depends on the issue. And there's no need to broad brush liberals, as I am a liberal who has no problem with Tuvel's conjecture, and I'm sure there are many liberals who likewise aren't outraged by her writing.

In fairness, the OP framed his post as someone on the left looking for opinions from the center and right, which indicated to me that the thread itself was partisan. I wasn't trying to paint all liberals as the same. Apologies if it came off that way.

Maybe not legal, but apparently there is no reason that you can't self-identify as white. That should keep them from even approaching you in the first place.

You could also self-identify as tall, go theme park to theme park and sue the day lights out of each one when they tell you that you can't get on specific rides. :D

Considering how often you use their arguments, you should self-identify as straw or herring.

Give me one real example of someone ever doing this? So far, every example I have seen has been someone trying to be not persecuted or discriminated based on their identity? Wanting equal rights, equal treatment, non-discrimination, is not a "benefit."

Wow. Had to look that up. Didn't even know this was a thing. And it seems more prevalent than I would have guessed.

I'm always a little wary of the WSJ's opinion on academia, but in this case, I think the author hits on a good point. Following the publication of a poorly-rendered scholarly argument, about 500 people signed a petition asking the journal to apologize for publishing the piece.

    This is a mistake.

One person, steeped in the arguments of transgenderism should have sent a rebuttal and hammered away at Tuvel’s arguments. But, to call her arguments "epistemic violence" is silly nonsense.

If she's wrong, prove it through philosophy and research.

Personally, I think that Tuvel hits on an interesting argument. If we can, through surgery and action, change our gender, why can't we change our race? Do people who use plastic surgery to alter their ethnic appearance still remain that race? And, why is race a stronger social construct, less mutable by surgery and action than gender?

It's an interesting question that around 500 people are unwilling to wrestle.

ha, but does one NEED the surgery to self identify as one wishes? why can't I reap the rewards of what I seek WITHOUT said surgery? Jenner was a "Woman" BEFORE her surgery for example.

If we can get the question into a bikini and source a 5000 gallon inflatable pool filled with jello, I bet we could change some minds ...
