So I had an accident with a HDD a few months ago where it was knocked off my desk while in use. I have managed to get all but 3 photos back off the drive but can't get the last 3. When I go to copy them to the new drive I get the following:

"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “_DSC0441.NEF” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)"

I can see a thumbnail preview of the file in finder however.

I've tried searching for error -36 but can't find anything on it. I didn't have a backup of them when the accident happened but I luckily do have the smart preview from Lightroom but would obviously like the full file.

Happy to pay if there is some software that will help fix this.

Have you repaired the USB drive and the volume with Disk Utility? For troubleshooting error -36 it is usually suggested to try this command at the root path of the volume/directory in question:
    dot_clean /Volumes/your_USB_volume

You can get the correct volume name with the ‘df’ command.

I will -guess- that when the hard drive was damaged, some of that damage involved the sectors on the platters in which the data for the files you want resides.

Unless you have a backup somewhere, I will also guess that you're probably not going to get those files back.
I'm wondering if even a professional data recovery outfit could retrieve them (if it was physical damage to the platters).

How much are these three particular pics worth to you?
