George W. Bush: Free Press ‘Indispensable to Democracy’

Trump calls himself a Republican. George Bush also is a Republican.

Trump calls himself a conservative. George Bush is also a political conservative.

The difference between the two men is that George W. Bush has the decency to value the importance of American democratic principles…. such as freedom of the press. Donald Trump, if he gets his way, wants to erode the very principles that gave birth to America. The principles that were established by the ideas of the founding fathers.

Voltaire was not an American founding father, but he most certainly inspired many of the brilliant American patriots like Benjamin Franklin.

"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Voltaire

It's funny how silent Bush was during the obama administration and now he's waking from his 8 year slumber.

Because as much as he opposed Obama's liberalism, Dubya clearly is more worried (and feels threatened) about Trump's assault on democratic principles. And rightly so.

I think he realized that despite their political differences Obama had the good of the country in mind, while now Trump has the good of Trump in mind not the good of the country.

No, Dubya is more worried that Trump is going to dismantle the imperialistic neoconservatism that has dominated the U.S. Government for decades, including under Obama.

Bush's signature gave life to warrantless spying. Obama's signature to the extension act gave life to a drastic expansion in domestic surveillance, which was later used to spy on journalists.

Trump's actions to date amount to saying mean things about reporters and doesn't even come close to the records of Bush and Obama.

Bush doesn't give a rat's ass about democratic principles. He is a lying war criminal deserving of a federal supermax prison cell.

    Not at all.

George W. Bush and his coterie has not risen any higher in my estimation. And believe me, I didn't think the US could go any lower in their choice of president.

But, the thing is… Donald J. Trump is such a crazy out of control loon that by comparison he makes Dubya look good.

    Quite simple really.

    Sorry, still not a hero.

But we on the Left do appreciate when someone on the Right adheres to principle, instead of falling lockstep behind trump simply because of the (R) after his name.

Maybe if the GOP had some we would not be stuck with Trump.

Not that it really matters, but I don't think that that quote was from Voltaire. It does raise some interesting questions though. Would you take up arms to defend those farthest from your political views?

And isn't Trump more of a populist, rather than a republican? His compadre Bannon seems to be a patchwork of political ideas mostly focused on cyclical cataclysmic events.

Trump said he wants to bar "fake news" media outlets from WH briefings. MSM wants you to think Trump hates the media, just like they are constantly trying to get you to believe Russia influenced the election.

C'mon folks, use some critical thinking.

Holy crap I'm becoming a Trump defender. LOL

The mainstream media wants us to think that Trump hates the media? You mean, like they're spinning a narrative that isn't there?

Trump called the media the "enemy of the American people." Direct quote, not any paraphrasing made up by the media.

That's some pretty strong (and dangerous) terminology that he chose to use. Do you really think Trump doesn't hate the media?

No it's because Trump killed the Bush political dynasty. The Bushes will never get over what Trump did to Jeb.

Once Trump goes down for corruption the Bushes are going to be one of the few prominent Republicans that come out fairly clean. The Trump presidency is probably the one thing that gives Jeb another shot at it. Maybe if Trump hasn't been impeached he could even take him down in the 2020 primary.

    You are not alone!

More people start to realize it every day.

The russia conspiracy theory, constant name-calling, safe spaces, fake news and the OP of this thread references a comedy show with dubya in it and appearantely doesn't know what "freedom of the press" even means.

It's true. Trump had all the anchors of the major news channels wiretapped. He's preparing to arrest and detain them on trumped-up charges, much like Erdogan has done in Turkey.
