And down goes another one. And really? Not aware of the law? Then why all the sneaking around?

Age of consent should be 16 anyway, and is in many states.

Doesn't matter. He broke the law and drove a girl over state lines to do it. He knew damn well he shouldn't be doing what he did.

Sex is not the problem. His religious justification of rejection of sex is the problem.

Probably the first real thing he ever did in his life. And now he has to go to jail. Poor guy.

I would put it the other way round if I was in power: these guys go to jail for being pastors and let out - and given a medal - if they do something like this and prove they are normal.

As far as I know, pastors are not required to be celibate, only Catholic priests.

Ick and shame on you. There is NOTHING normal about a 56 year old guy having sex with a 16 year old. I don't care how much barely legal porn you watch, but the second you actually try to have a relationship with someone who could be your grandchild, you cross into the realm of icky.

Honestly I can think of a long list of reason for sneaking around that has nothing to with the legality of it.

Many of them have to do with ethical but remember legal does not mean something is ethical.

    Born-agains hate sex though.

    ----------

It's not normal because people with his religious beliefs condition everything what people think is 'moral'.

Truth is there is no normal if two people are consenting and no what they are consenting to. At 16 that happens.

Age of consent in Canada is 16 - but not with someone in a position of authority over you, like, say, a pastor or school superintendent.

Is it too late to add a poll to this thread? What age difference isn't creepy?

Here in Alabama, you can marry as early as 14 as long as you are related.

Get a load of this one....

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1WQEDkZgS8

All the BS that goes along with the church these days makes me fearful for people like my sister who puts all four of her young children at the hands of people she doesn't really know that well.

That is one old looking 16 year old. She looks like she's in her 40's and the guy on the other hand looks young.

I have a little girl due next week! What do I tell her? Do I tell her that there is no God? I'm supposed to be Catholic, but at the same time I don't agree with a lot of their policies. Do I tell her there is no God?

    What do you all think?

In your position I'd tell her all you know and feel, doubts and all, but fundamentally let her make her own mind up. Do you want to raise a kid who takes what she's told unquestioning or someone with critical thinking skills who will both have conviction in her beliefs and the ability to back them up? It's an observable truth that you can easily raise a kid which complete conviction in any religion, even those which diametrically oppose each other, indoctrination is easy, raising a kid who can think for themselves may be difficult at times but it's certainly worth it.

I've always had a deep respect for any parent who prioritises their child's intellectual development over their desire for them to turn out like they did, this is something that applies to more than just religion.

You're right. I'm just scared as hell I guess. The reality of being a Father is sinking in and I know it will be years before she really understands me. She comes from two rich cultures and I just don't want her to make the mistakes in life I did. Her name is Eleigh Antoinette Burkhard. I can't wait to look in her eyes!
