Why do we publicly announce we have vulnerabilities in our cargo transport system?

How is that saying we have vulnerabilities? We found the suckers. Well the respective countries did anyway for us.

…or, alternatively, "Dear Brer Bin Laden: Please oh please don't try to ship bombs on cargo ships. We totally aren't prepared for that, honest."

And as of the writing of the article, not all packages have been found.

It seems it takes something like this for us to up our game. We do it for a while and then get into a lazed state again.

So Al Qaeda has been reduced to Fed Exing mail bombs?

Isn't it about time that we admit that the Global War On Terror is being fought against a mirage?

Only a mirage doesn't try to send explosives to Chicago synagogues on or near an election day.

I thought everyone knew our cargo system was essentially an open door...

PS: do I have an unhealthy addiction to PRSI if I'm posting from the dance floor at a frat party?

I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist but this all sounds suspicious to me.

How did two packages that had already been loaded onto the aircraft get 'found'? Noone searches cargo after it's actually been loaded onto an aircraft.

Is it a coincidence that this has happened just a couple of days after TSA/aircraft security measures have started to come under increased international criticism? Linky

There's a LOT of money in the TSA and homeland security and a lot of vested interests. It's a real 'porkbelly' industry.

And of course, after today security spending is going to be going up, not down.

Mind linking me to a source? I've been following this thing all day and haven't heard that bit.

I was under the impression that they were 'regular' mail bombs that would detonate when opened (ie- not on a specific date).

I wasn't aware any of the devices made it to the US?

Failures are known, successes are not.

A pleasant return package ;). Is everything that comes out of Yemen considered suspicious?

Blame what? Terrorists tried to do damage. Plot was foiled. Therefore security services are actually doing their jobs.

Until Israel improves it's policies unfortunately this stuff will happen :(.

I'm sure synagogue's are very careful about opening packages - especially ones they aren't expected.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I don't buy this story. An organization like al-Qaida is not stupid, this "attack" was. This looks like a big scam to justify the crazy expenses for "homeland security", the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan and for Obama to get some more votes. Just like the "attack series" a few weeks ago in Europe. The media spreads panic across the people, we all get harassed at airports, by the police, etc...

Who do you think is behind the scam?

UPDATE: the explosives were more powerful than previously believed. At least 3 times the amount of PETN than the Christmas bomber had.

So were the Osama video before Buses re-election and maybe even the Madrid train bombing a "scam" by the intelligence agencies too?

I think al Quieda is just good at attempting to disrupt elections.
