I'd like to get an external DVD Burner for my iBook G4. I sold my iMac G4 to get the iBook G4 so I have a decent amount of DVD-R's left over. Here are some things I'd like: Roughly $200-$300 (of course I can always spend less... ) Burn DVD-R a must. Burn DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW a bonus. What exactly is DVD-RAM? It seems not much different from DVD-RW except it has half the capacity. I'm certain I'm missing something. I'd prefer it to be firewire 400 (can't be 800). It doesn't have to burn at blazing fast speeds. I don't mass produce DVD"s. I might burn one or two a month. As long as it can do it within 8 hours or so that's fine with me (I gotta sleep sometime). I've looked at the Lacie burner on Apple's website and I was thinking about that one but I'm certain there are alternatives out there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
you'll need to buy toast or some other DVD burning application to work with it ... iDVD won't burn to that external drive .. but with the new one you could still make an iDVD project and burn it on a PC or something ..
I already have Toast. And while I have a PC in my apartment it's sitting in the corner in a tangle of wires and has been for a good 2 years now. I don't even know if it boots still. Can I burn an iDVD project in Toast 6? (still need assistance on a DVD burner to buy... I'm thinking the one on Apple's site isn't too bad a deal considering it comes with Toast 6).
dvd burners the mag mac addict had review of several external burners a month or two ago.. I remember Lacie was one as was formac...you might want to look at Other world computing.. they have good stuff although one of their sales people messed me and my mac up royally... they apologized profusely but that was it.. so I am peeved with them though that is really agood place to look. tell us what you get and how you like it. if I can find the mac addict I will add to this post.
ps: almost all the dvd burners come packaged with software, some better than others, but all servicable..and you have toast which is fine.
dvd burner check out http://www.mcetech.com/sdfwusb2.html and the formac davidsoen superdrive from mac addict review.. the mctech was the pick of the lot
Well I just stopped over at http://www.mcetech.com and saw that I can get an internal DVD-R/-RW/-RAM put in my iBook G4 for $379... so now I'm sorta torn... it's a little bit more money but it looks like it'll work with iDVD (so the page says)... *sigh*
According to the MCE page it says that their drive works with iDVD. It's the bottom bullet: Compatible with iTunes, iDVD and Apple DVD Player
If you can get it in writing that they will replace your computer if they mess it up, then consider it. I am a bit paranoid about sending off my computer to anybody. That's just me, though.
