I recently won an external hard drive. Particularly, this one: PQI H550

On the site itself, it says that "The application software provided can only function on Microsoft operating systems. MAC OSX and LINUX operating systems are NOT supported."

I am wondering if this means I really wont be able to use it with my mac or if it can be solved by formatting to FAT format? If so, how? Since I cannot detect the drive in my Disk Utility.

You can use the HDD on anything. Just the proprietary software that the company made only works on Windows. I wouldn't worry about it; most people, myself included, never use the supplied software with a HDD anyway.

Connect the HDD and open Disk Utility. Then select that HDD from the list on the left and Click on Erase and use the format Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Go ahead and connect it up, format it for OS X and enjoy!
