Facebook Begins Dark Mode Rollout for iOS

Facebook has begun rolling out Dark Mode support for its flagship iOS app, which comes just over a year after the Facebook Messenger app also gained Dark Mode support.

After evidence showing the company had been working on the feature surfaced in April, select users are now able to activate the feature under Settings & Privacy within the Menu tab. Users are able to choose from light and dark appearances, as well as an option to automatically change the app's appearance based on the device's system settings.

Facebook confirmed to Social Media Today that the feature is only currently available for "a small percentage of users globally," which hints that the company may be slowly rolling out the feature first for testing purposes.

Yup, a lot of their handling of feature roll out for Beta (or rather A/B testing clients, I guess) is weird.

I’ve been on the version of the app with the large F icon in the middle for months now, haven’t had Avatars roll out, and have no way to opt back to the main branch.

A lot of forums I was on moved to Facebook back when it was a thing then moved back off it as the user base decided they were leaving.

Discord took over much of socialising outside your core friends.

Family and friends might have been on Facebook but we still arranged things over the phone or text messages. And it quickly got creepy when people posted on pictures with kids in the family so that returned to sharing over iMessage or Skype.

Facebook did wrap a lot of these activities up for a short time then everyone quickly caught on it was a bad idea and diversified again. The big one that set a lot of was when messaging no longer worked in their app and they wanted you to download another one.

A lot of forums I was on moved to Facebook back when it was a thing then moved back off it as the user base decided they were leaving.

I think it's fascinating how wildly habits vary per geography and user group (I'm in my mid 30s and most people I know are around that range, and I've worked with various teams across EU and Middle East). That being said, and in the countries I've lived/worked in:

- Very few people use dedicated forums
- Rarely anyone I've met (socially & in the workplace) uses iMessage/sms to communicate. It's typically FB messenger, whatsapp, instagram messenger or telegram. For whatever reason Viber is a big thing in Greece.
- Discord is.. what is discord?
- Skype.. I think that was a thing in 2016?
- walking outside.. well, sure, if you're geographically close and it's a sunny Saturday and you don't have things to do
- phone calls.. only if something is terribly urgent or life threatening

Other than that, twitter and instagram are a thing. But I think that sums it up.

Because they had most of their developers working on code to censor and shadowban people, and just one poor schlub working on Dark Mode.

It's scary that folks still will install the Facebook app given it's one big spyware. At least with browser you can use adblock and tracking blocker software.

Mid 30s in village in Scotland. If it wasn't the pandemic we would just walk into a friends house and switch the kettle on. Regarding Skype specifically, that was where people drew the line, especially the older generation. After Skype there was a reluctance to do anything else bar FaceTime. Granny understands Skype and has the grandkids on Skype and everyone else has a Skype. It died off for group chats with Discord, but it is still the best 1:1 service that is just understood.

wow, having dark mode is passing off as innovation these days. How many engineers and man hours did it take to implement this? Not to devalue the level of effort that goes into design and implementation. However, why doesn't Facebook put in the work to remove all of the hate and manipulation that is on the platform!

On dark mode, I am surprised how much I really like it. I wish everything had 'dark mode'. It's just easier to read. Colors seem better. Maybe it's just different, but it seems so much better. *shrug*

Dark Mode is definitely easier on the eyes, especially if you are using it in the dark. Most of the apps I use run in Dark Mode -- Facebook has been the notable exception.

Same I always get shafted by split rollouts. I might have an avatar and dark in 2050. Same as not getting the GMail dark until they finally just gave it to everyone.

Only thing that stinks about dark is not everyone having it. Go to one light mode and you are blind.

Seems like that applied to way too many after so many months of it being rolled out (after they originally said it would be rolled out to everyone in a matter of a couple of weeks or so).
