I haven't seen the movie, but every review I read said some something to the effect of, "it's no Finding Nemo." I hope for Disney's sake this is a success, but all these analysts saying this is a sign that they can be okay without Pixar are exagerating (sp?) things a bit I think.
I saw the movie with my kids on Friday. Definitely no "Finding Nemo". Luckily, also no "Looney Toons Back in Action". It's middling fare. Way too convoluted, leading it to spend too little time on any of its various stories, and yet it still found the time to spend way too much time on a lame baseball game offshoot that had me shifting in my seat from boredom. You could practically see check-boxes being ticked off as the movie progressed. Example: at the end of the movie the chicken looks at Ugly Duckling and says something like "By the way, I always thought you were attractive" at which point he sweeps her into his arms for a kiss. Yeah, love story: check.
Overall, one of the few Disney movies (many more recent than old) and very few CGI movies I'm not expecting to buy on DVD.
IMHO, good opening weekend proves that people would love to see classic Disney movie "magic" applied to the CGI aesthetic. It says absolutely nothing about the quality of the movie itself. You'll see that (or not) next weekend. I know that Chicken Little won't be getting our repeat business, and I suspect my nieces and nephews won't be seeing it after our reaction either.
Insert lecture here on how bass-ackwards Hollywood is for making opening weekend sales so incredibly "important" financially instead of long-term sales, but I'll save that for another audience
That's pretty much what I've heard. And I totally agree with you on the over-emphasis on opening box-offices. I expect this one to tank next weekend.
