I have a bit of an issue with my spotlight menu. I can't
decide what to do about it.

Until the Leaopard graphics update, all was fine. After
that the Spotlight menu flickered annoyingly. Later I
had reason to reinstall OS X and the problem disappeared
again. So it did look as though the graphics update might
be the cause of the problem. I've taken care not to
reapply that update since.

Things were fine for a bit and then OS X 10.5.3 came out
and there were one or two improvements there that I wanted.
I installed it and - oh no! - The flicker is back. Blast.

It has been suggested I try the HD2600XT firmware update
to see if that helps. Only trouble is, that is completely
irreversible and there's an awful lot of people who have
applied it and are unhappy:

Summary: can make your card noisy, use more energy and in
the worst case brick it.

Also, bear in mind that this flicker doesn't occur anywhere
else that I can see, there are no other graphical anomalies,
and no lock-ups. There are no glitches under Windows either.

So what to do?

The easiest option is to ignore it. It looks a bit rubbish,
but it may not be anything to worry about. Then again, is it
a symptom of a more sinister hidden problem?

I could take a punt on the firmware update, but then I might
have to ask Apple to exchange the card if it doesn't go well.
And frankly, I'm fed up with returning faulty products to Apple.
So I'd rather not take the risk.

Or I could reinstall OS X without 10.5.3. Or I could rummage
around the files on my original install disc and hope to
find a kernel extension, say, that will cure it.

What would you do?

Cheers.
