So the day I got the phone on launch day, I took the plastic off the top and bottom and put it right into the clear case I bought. Today is the first day that I am carrying it "naked" and one thing I realized that I know others have said, but dang the gold on the stainless, is no where near a gold color. It looks more like a Brass that hasnt been cleaned in 50 years and is tarnished. More of a brown than gold.

I did notice though how sticky the stainless is with this gold coating though, No where near as slick feeling as my previous silver X was.

Naked naked? No skin or anything? I want to buy I know I’ll scratch this thing so fast
I don't use cases, skins, bumpers, screen protectors or anything else like that. Strictly naked.

Welcome to the club! I’ve been carrying iPhones naked since the original, and the Gold XS/Max is definitely one that I wouldn’t want to cover up. It’s gorgeous.

How has the gold stainless held up? Have you had any scratches on it? I noticed when I had the X, the stainless nicked up so easily when I would carry without a case.

It’s early, but no scratches. There is a coating on the Gold and Space Grey models that prevents them from scratching easily.

The downside is that, unlike the stainless steel on the Silver, scratches on the Gold and Space Grey can’t be polished out.

I’ve actually had to use a cape cod cloth on my gold Xs already. Worked a treat for me. (I haven’t lost any of the gold colour, looks as new) I wouldn’t personally recommend doing it unless the scratch /blemish is really annoying you though.

Edit. To clarify, the blemish was only a couple of mm in size, but looked black in colour. The polishing cloth worked at getting it out without damaging the gold. I don’t know how it got there. Looked like oxidising to me ..

You are mighty brave to go bare pickle with that expensive beast!

May fortune be your friend..

Neil DeGrasse Tyson has an interesting take on this (it has some language but it’s worth watching since he’s a genius :D).

Essentially, if you don’t want to break your phone, make “not dropping it” second nature.

EDIT: he makes his point in the first two minutes.

I have been lucky and have not dropped my phone in over a year. Have never dropped and damaged one in 6-7 years. Save enough money on AC+ that I am ahead of the game.

My AW4 is a bit different. AC+ is cheap for the watch so I get it in case I bash it hard on something. Plus you can get an express replacement quickly!

Everyone need to make their own choices!

Ah...very good information. I wouldn’t have guessed that would work. Thanks!

No problem. I mean, someone had to be the first to try it right :p

I’m definitely not saying people should try this though, as results may vary. I only did it because the blemish was on the bottom of the phone and rather visible.

I’m usually caseless but this time I bought a cheap slimline case that mimics the stainless steel band of the silver model around the edges. Doesn’t add any extra bulk and retains the look of the device so I’m using it until the new phone over-protectiveness wears off.

I’ve done it with my 8 plus. I just tried it with my Max and it’s actaully easier. The rails or “gripier”

I took a video but apparently we can’t upload video clips.

The gold one at least is a lot gripier than my X was on the stainless. They say its the coating used on it this year that makes it that way
