The snark level in this thread is way too high. Why not try voicing your opinion in a respectful manner?

Well you turned out to be right. Still, I'd probably downvote you now just for spite, if MacRumors would let me.

No spite, I just find it amusing how so many people are all dead set against it and anyone who recommends it... until apple decides to do it. Then suddenly they change their minds. =]

That's what happens when you have to wrap money around your phones to get people to buy them. Imagine their loss if they had actually invested in R&D instead of simply making an inferior copy and gluing a big screen on the front.

And, yes, I mean their TVs too. All gimmick.

Before people go off on one, please remember the actual results of shipped phones worldwide by Samsung is much higher than Apple:

http://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-global-smartphone-share-falls-as-apples-remains-static/

That report is wrong. It came out BEFORE Apple announced latest earnings which blew away ALL estimates. In the last quarter, Apple *MATCHED* samsung in total smartphone unit sales. That's just incredible considering that Samsung units include all their cheap $100 phones. The trajectory is obvious. Apple WILL surpass Samsung for all of 2015.

You mean like how Samsung fanboys were against metal bodies until Samsung finally decided to make it?

Talking about apple copying for making a bigger phone is weak. The size of the screen is really a special design feature? Here are some real game changers that were copied by Google / Samsung:

-The App Store
-The full screen touch interface (look at apples argument of Samsung phones before and after the iPhone). That is hands down the biggest innovation to date.
-Touch ID

How does the size of the screen even compare to those. Did every company who was not the first, but made an 80 inch tv "copy" a crucial design of the first one??

Apple made a large screen way before everyone else. It was a year before "tablets" TRIED to completely copy the iPad.

I believe Apple copied the app store from the first ever app store from Verizon!

Anyone who says Apple copied big phones is an idiot.

Big Android phones were only made because of the iPad.

All Android phones were made because of the iPhone.

Any links for this? Especially showing other phones having larger screens than the iPhone is due to the iPad.

----------

Didn't you know? Android invented 5.5 inches!!!11! :)

I think it was right around the time Apple invented the rectangle with rounded corners.

I was screaming about the tiny screens for 3 years....and got flamed repeatedly on this board. Anyone who has used an ip6+ for a week CAN'T go back to the size of an ip5.

Same with me, I still find it humorous!

I guess so! Assuming that happened. I got fed up with Samsung a long time ago, not paid any attention to them since. There's so many new and better options now.

Weird, I said that small screens are nice and was bashed over and over again on this board.... :( :( :( :(

Funny enough, companies never stopped releasing tablets with "rounded corners", so what's up with his "rounded corner patent"?!?!?!

No. Two reasons. One, Big android phones were made because the android OS and the manufacturers couldn't make the android phone's battery efficient. So they had to put in much larger batteries. After that point they said what the heck, lets make a bigger screen. Two, the android manufacturers were a lot closer to Asia and there is an cultural difference in size preference. The Asian manufacturers picked up on it faster than the Silicon Valley guys at Apple. But they were pushed in that direction because they needed to include a much bigger battery to get the performance of an iPhone.

That's a weird theory. I'll just go with mine - when the iPhone was released, it was a great size for what it was supposed to do. Then the power of the devices became stronger and stronger, great productive and sophisticated gaming apps were developed, other apps as well - guitar pro and stuff, my fingers filled up the screen so a need for larger screen estate was the logical consequence. Steve said bla bla, at that point Steve's bla bla was fitting and correct, but then it became outdated by the tech he himself pushed... and that's pretty much it, imho.

What we've learned from this:

  • People really are willing to pay more for quality, even in non-Western countries where an iPhone is a month's salary.
  • People are wising up and not just buying the the phone with the most or greatest specs listed on the box.
  • Stuffing a smartphone with a bunch of half-baked wiz-bang features like "no-hands" web page scrolling and then bagging on Apple for not having those features will not buy you customer loyalty.
  • Slow and steady wins the race.

Like others have stated, I've seen tons of people with iPhone 6/6+ models while out and about. The adoption rate of their latest models is higher than I've ever seen before. And for those who converted from Android, I'm pretty certain the great majority will never go back.

Wait a second. You are assuming Samsung won't get any bounce from Galaxy S6 or the next Note. Add in the huge number of cheaper phones and it isn't 100% clear that Apple will sell more smartphones than Samsung in 2015.

Now I'm a big believer that we are entering into the iOS era. But this quarter was partly due to the global demand of iPhone 6 and also partly due to Apple being better at launching more product in more places during the launch quarter.

The second part will depress, slightly, the sales for 2015. Take China. Yes China seems to like the 6. But also you have to look at how much better Apple launched the 6 than they launched the 5s in China.

On the high end, don't discount Samsung's ability to launch a high end phone in April or May of 2015 which is more than half a year after they've had dozens of iPhone 6's to tear down and review.

Apple wins because it has iOS and working ecosystem (for now). But they already slipped from the usual "it just works" design that people (even the techies) hate on them.

Samsung on the other hand has HW tech and advantage. But on the long run any hw without a quality software is just a dead brick.

Yeeeeeeee get Shrekt. Edit: I only wrote that because someone who hates Apple but hates Samsung even more was looking. It feels good, not so much because I approve of Apple but because I was always annoyed with Samsung.

It's not 100% clear... but it's a possibility.

Samsung actually dropped by about 3 million yearly units from 2013 to 2014... while Apple simultaneously went up by almost 40 million yearly units.

If that trajectory keeps up... we might see Apple overtake Samsung for the year eventually. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Not that it's a contest or anything :)

Samsung will undoubtedly launch new flagship phones this year... but it probably won't help their situation. I honestly don't think Samsung will get a boost from the upcoming Galaxy S6 or the Note 5.

They launched the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 in 2013... and their Holiday quarter was 86 million smartphones.

They launched the Galaxy S5 and Note 4 in 2014... but their Holiday quarter dropped to only 75 million smartphones.

So I don't see how a couple of new flagships in 2015 will reverse this downward slide.

Like I said earlier... Samsung already dropped unit sales YoY. I'm not sure how they will get those back.

That's because of the 40% profit Apple makes on every phone sold, one day people will realise that.

Consumers would never care what the profit margin is. It doesn't make sense for them to. Not sure why you're upset that a phone can be valued at much higher than its production cost.

I still have my old iPhone 5 and don't see the issue with it. I have to keep adjusting my grip to use the iPhone 6. I don't consider the bigger screen size an upgrade.

So you concede that in the last holiday quarters that Samsung launched their flagships they sold more than Apple did in their best ever holiday quarter?

The issue was raised that the upcoming Galaxy S6 and Note 5 will give Samsung a boost in 2015.

I don't see that happening... considering Samsung's sales have already dropped despite flagships like the Galaxy S series and the Note series receiving yearly updates.

Basically... Samsung sold fewer phones in 2014 than they did in 2013... both for the Holiday quarter and the entire year. Clearly something is going on.

Do you think they will go up again?

Am I the only one that noticed Samsung really hasn't come out with any new commercials attacking Apple since the iPhone 6/6Plus has come out? I think the popularity of those devices took Samsung by surprised. Now, they are looking stupid because Apple is getting the last laugh. That's why it's not good to try to bully people, because in the end, you look like an ass!

I remember quite a few dealing with bendgate, wall huggers was before that, I think?

But in principle your right - maybe they realized that their major customer in the semiconductor division should better not be made angry

With Apple orders coming in Samsung at least can benefit in this devision, though mobile sales declining...

EDIT: Discovered the ones I meant...
