I'd like to hear comments about the suitability of the 2020 iMac 64GB RAM w/5700XT 16GB VRAM for video editing specifically VFX, After Effects, Blackmagic Fusion - versus using a PC with the next Gen CPU's from Intel/AMD and the forthcoming Nvidia 3000 series/AMD Big Navi graphics cards.

As I review the user comments on amazon and newegg for PC components, I see that a lot of people have trouble with failure of components not working out of the box, whereas from my own experience and others with Macs, there seems a higher percentage of people who don't have any trouble with Apple hardware malfunctioning compared to PC.

So for editing VFX, 2D motion graphics for youtube videos, I'm torn between the latest 2020 iMac with 5700XT 16GB VRAM, or making the jump to PC which comes with a greater amount of unpredictability in its hardware.

My 4K videos have a lot of 2D motion graphics effects.

(I'll be sure to upgrade to 64GB RAM using 3rd party upgrade).

In terms of cost, the Mac and PC that I've spec'd out don't differ in cost by a significant amount.

Im not an editor, but I use After Effects professionally. At work Ive been using a 6 core "trash can" mac pro from 2013. It maybe uses 1/3 of the processor when rendering. You can easily run it in the bg and keep working, or set off multiple bg renderers. Check out the activity monitor and see how much of the cpu is used.

The new imac is much faster than the 2013 mac pro. It even beats the newer imac pro (which ive used at another shop) and mac pro for after effects. Newer processors with more cores from amd or the xeon wont really speed things up. The intel i7 and i9 8 and 10 core processors in the imac have a faster base clock speed, which is more important. Puget systems has a great guide for how to build a fast pc for After Effects, and they use the same types of parts that are in the new iMac.

Do you use anything like Maya or C4D? Or are you strictly 2d? If you are using a 3d aplication heavily all day, then probably get a pc. The gpu renders generally needs a nvidia card And apple is stubborn and wont make those anymore. For 3d cpu rendering, its a different story. You will want a machine with more cores and better cooling (and cheaper cost than the new, overpriced mac pro).

Thanks. All my animations are 2D which act as information overlays for talking head videos. So from what you're saying the new 2020 iMac should more than adequately meet my needs.

Looking at the benchmarks of your 6 core, 2013 trash can Mac Pro, my late 2015 i5 3.2GHz 27" iMac's benchmarks are around half that older Mac Pro computer.

My present computer slows to a crawl when using certain aspects of Davinci Resolve.

No problem. Someone else can chime in about editing and DaVinci, but for AE, you should be good.
